This position is located in the Sanitation Section of Facility Management Service (FMS), Boise VA Medical Center. The incumbent assigned to this position is responsible for Housekeeping and custodial work assigned to the Sanitation Section. The individual assigned to this position represents FMS and FMS programs. The incumbent must use personal initiative and knowledge of the Medical Center and must follow all station Memorandum and FMS policies. The Boise VA Medical Center is a multi mission, complexity level 2 medical center and is comprised of approximately 1015 Federal employees, 579 volunteers, fee basis employees, WOC employees, contract employees, work studies, STEP, SCEP, and TCF Interns. The Boise VA Medical Center is an 87 bed hospital with an Intensive Care Unit, Community Living Center, Emergency Room, clinics, VISN 20 Eye lab, and a Home Base Patient Care program.
Work Schedule: Varied, Hospital is operations 24 hours per day.

Cleaning several types of rooms associated with a medical center such as restrooms, patient rooms, exam rooms, offices, recreation rooms, etc.
Using, moving, and controlling heavy equipment and small tools, carry and set up ladders.
Utilizing vacuum equipment including carpet steam extractor and commercial models.
Performing comprehensive floor care such as to strip, scrub, apply finish and machine buff floors, using powered scrubbers and buffers, etc.
Washing various pieces of patient furniture, portable equipment, beds, etc. that are located in clinical areas.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The incumbent performs work that requires continuous walking, standing, bending, stooping, sometimes crawling or kneeling, climbing and descending stairs, lifting, reaching, and pushing and pulling heavy carts. Work includes repetitive motions, i.e. the back and forth movement associated with mopping or sweeping floors. Items lifted may weigh up to up to 50 lbs., and items pushed or pulled may weigh up to 500 lbs. Work requires the ability to handle and control heavy powered equipment, high speed rotary equipment, and load housekeeping and/or trash carts. Works occasionally from ladders to clean high ceilings and walls and clean ceiling light fixture panels, thus will need to carry, set up, and climb ladders/scaffolding. Work may require working in undesirable conditions and or positions.
Typically works indoors, with adequate heating, lighting and ventilation. Occasional exterior work is performed at entrances and cleaning windows, doors, etc. Incumbent is exposed to vibration from heavy equipment and to skin irritations from strong cleaning solutions. Care is required to avoid serious injuries when working on ladders/high lifts, and when using powered equipment. Incumbent is exposed to strong cleaning solutions; moderately heavy physical effort is required at times for the moving of equipment and furniture preceding and following floor care operations. Working from ladders is required. Incumbent is exposed to possible contagion and must follow proper safety and infection control procedures for working in contaminated areas and handling contaminated trash. Must adhere to a close standard of cleanliness at all times and in all situations.
Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
