MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs carpentry maintenance duties required to alter, remove, repair or maintain all structural parts of a building, including construction, erection, removal, altering or repairing floors, stairs or steps, gutters, sills, joists, stringers, girders, rafters, sheathing, interior partitions including folding type, insulation and any other wooden building parts. Prepares, turns out or otherwise cuts, fits and. installs interior and exterior finish work such as cabinets, counter, baseboard, door and window trim, comer boards, soffits, lattice, ornamental brackets, etc. Fits and hangs doors, fits and sets windows, including installation of builder's hardware and allied accessories. Constructs form work for concrete walls, curbs, blocks, slabs, footings, etc. Fits and cuts and installs wall covering such as gypsum board, marlite, paneling, etc. Cuts, fits and installs composition roofing such as roiled roofing and strip shingles. Lays out patterns, cuts, fits, and installs ceilings, repairs flooring materials such as vinyl or rubber tiles and rubber cove baseboard.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:00am to 3:30pm

EXPERIENCE:

A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT:

Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note

: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

Carpenter is required to do considerable standing, stooping, and bending. Job requires working on ladders and scaffolds which requires working overhead or in a stretched, cramped or awkward position. Arm movement is considerable when nailing and using such hand tools as handsaws and planers. The incumbent will occasionally lift and carry items that weigh 50 pounds or more. They may also be called upon to work extended periods of time to support emergency situations and power outages.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Some work is done inside a shop area where carpenter is subject to cuts or danger from flying splinters and chips. On some occasions there will be sawdust in the air which can be unpleasant. Carpenter works outside in all kinds of weather and sometimes is exposed to rain or very cold weather. Also works on scaffolding, high ladders or rooftops where there is danger of falling.
