About the Position:
This position is being filled under the Expedited Hiring Authority for Shortage Category and/or Critical Need Health Care Occupations.
In this position, you will serve as a Physician Assistant for the Division of Trauma Surgery Services, Department of Surgery, SICU, Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC). The Division of Trauma department fulfills an extremely important mission that directly impacts the United States of America's efforts in support of the Overseas Contingency Operations (OCO) and provides trauma and emergency care to active duty, military dependents, retirees and critically injured civilians in the greater San Antonio Area.
Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC), located at Fort Sam Houston, TX is a modern, state-of-the-art 450-bed health care facility that provides level-one trauma and graduate medical education. The physical appearance and efficiency of space throughout the hospital creates a user-friendly, high quality healthcare environment for patients, their families, and health care providers. Fort Sam Houston is located in San Antonio, the second largest metropolitan area in Texas with a warm climate and close proximity to beaches.

Serve as a subject matter expert on trauma and surgical/medical/pediatric critical illness and disease process diagnosis and treatment.
Provide advanced and complex multidisciplinary management to critically ill and injured, active duty soldiers, reserve soldiers, other military beneficiaries and Secretary of Defense designees or civilian trauma patients.
Perform invasive and noninvasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including lifesaving procedures.
Perform comprehensive and problem focused histories and physical examinations.
Evaluate and treat emergency department patients ranging in age from neonates to the elderly in a variety of setting including the acute care pod, pediatrics pod and trauma/resuscitation pod.
Administer vasopressor infusion therapy, blood product therapy and many other highly complex therapeutic regimens.

Two year trial/probationary period may be required.
Appointment is subject to the completion of a favorable suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a background investigation.
Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to applicant testing and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to sign DA Form 5019 requiring participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
A pre-placement medical examination is required.
Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) Training and certification sponsored or endorsed by the American Heart Association (AHA). Advanced certification (e.g., Advanced Life Support) does not supersede BLS completion.
Applicants must be able to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.

Basic requirements for a Physician Assistant:
Degree: Graduation from a physician assistant educational program, accredited by the Accreditation Review Committee on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or its predecessors, at a college, university, or educational institution that is accredited by an accrediting body or organization recognized by the Secretary, U.S. Department of Education.
Certification: This position requires successful completion of the National Commission of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) examination; must maintain status as a certified physician assistant, including completion of all requirements for continuing medical education (CME) and re-certification.
Licensure: Candidates must have a permanent, full, and unrestricted license to practice as a Physician Assistant in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
Experience required: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: performing physical examinations on patients, as well as, acute lifesaving interventions or management of critically ill/injured patients in the emergency department.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12).

With the overseas contingency operations continuing, the spotlight justifiably is on the Army’s medics, evacuation units, surgical teams and field hospitals. Army Medicine is a seamless chain of care stretching back to fixed hospitals in Europe and the United States, where Soldiers receive state-of-the-art care. Field medical units are under the command of the combatant Commanders, because their movements and work must be coordinated with those of fighting forces. In contrast, all fixed hospitals (in the U.S. and outside the U.S.)are commanded by the MEDCOM.
