The incumbent serves as a Housekeeping Aid in the Environmental Management Service at the VA San Diego Healthcare System (VASDHS) which can include: San Diego VA Medical Center in La Jolla; Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) in Oceanside; Compensation & Pension Clinic in Mission Valley; Sorrento Valley Clinic, and Aspire Center (Old Town).
Work Schedule: Tours of duty may include rotating shifts, nights, weekends and holidays. Details may be discussed during the interview or at time of selection. Management reserves the right to determine and change tour of duty based on the needs of the service.
Day Shift - 07:00am - 3:30pm
Evening Shift - 2:30pm - 11:00pm
Night Shift - 10:00pm - 06:30am

Performs a wide variety of hospital housekeeping (janitorial/ custodial) work that requires substantial physical effort to operate and adjust heavy duty cleaning equipment.
Scrubs, strips, refinish, and polishes floors using heavy (industrial -type) powered scrubbers, burnishes, and buffers.
Cleans carpets; using heavy (industrial type) vacuum cleaners.
Cleans areas; such as patient and exam rooms, offices, corridors, and stairways.
Washes walls, windows, and blinds (at times must be reached by climbing ladders or using scaffolds).
Empties ash receptacles and wastebaskets.
Removes soiled and contaminated linens from work areas to soiled linen rooms.
Keep restrooms in clean, orderly, and sanitary condition.
Collects, replenishes (bags and containers), and transports all regulated medical waste for temporary storage and/ or disposal.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 12/28/2018.
Your background must demonstrate experience in a variety of cleaning duties, such as sweeping, mopping, and waxing floors; cleaning surfaces such as light fixtures, venetian blinds, and counter-tops; and cleaning restroom facilities including toilets, baths, and sinks.
EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: The screen-out element for this position is Ability to do the job of a Custodial Worker without more than normal supervision.
JOB ELEMENTS: Those who meet the minimum level of experience and training for the screen-out element will then be evaluated in each of the following job elements.
1. Work practices (Includes Keeping Things Neat, Clean and in Order)
2. Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (other than blueprints)
3. Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment
4. Dexterity and safety
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
PHYSICAL EFFORT/REQUIREMENTS: The position requires performance of work which involves light physical effort, such as that involved in using vacuum cleaners and dry mops; continually standing, bending, stooping and reaching; frequently lifting and emptying waste baskets; frequently pushing carts loaded with waste; and lifting and carrying items weighing up to 20 pounds. Also performs work which involves moderate to heavy physical effort, such as required to move heavy equipment and furniture, i.e., heavy industrial vacuum cleaners, heavy duty floor scrubbers and buffers, couches, beds, etc., and lifting, carrying and/or moving items weighing up to 40-50 pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Usually works indoors in areas which normally have adequate heat, light, and ventilation's. Will be exposed to vibration from heavy equipment and to skin irritations from strong cleaning solutions used in stripping floors, etc., as well as subject to cuts and bruises. Continually exposed to dust, dirt, and disagreeable odors, and is frequently exposed to organic material which may be contaminated and/or infectious and require special handling.
This job does not have an education qualification requirement.
