About the Position: At the entry level, you will serve as a Lock and Dam Repairer Helper in the Maintenance Section of the Illinois Waterway Project Office in Peoria, Il. Peoria, Illinois, halfway between Chicago and St. Louis, is a thriving city located on the banks of the Illinois River. For more information visit http://www.peoria.org/.

Developmental Position:

This position will be filled as a Lock and Dam Repairer Helper at the WG-5318-05 grade level and has noncompetitive promotion potential to the WG-5318-08 and WG-5318-10 grade levels. At the WG-5318-05 level, you will perform developmental assignments under closer than normal supervision. Assignments become progressively more difficult until the next performance level is reached.

Responsibilities

General maintenance and repair tasks on lock and dam equipment/machinery and on buildings, grounds, and structures located at lock and dam sites along the Illinois Waterway.

Welding, Pipe Fitting, Carpentry, Painting, and Sandblasting.

Cleaning, lubricating, adjusting, and replacing parts or other equipment.

Adjusting bearings in lock miter gates, culvert valves, and dam gate machinery.

Installing machinery and equipment.

Travel Required

The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.

This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.

This position is subject to Drug Abuse Testing Program requirements and deemed a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing.

This position requires the employee to wear and use protective clothing and equipment.

Shop Aptitude and Interest

Work requires continual physical effort in the handling of equipment and tools, while working from scaffolds, standing, stooping, bending, climbing, working overhead, etc. Uses coordination of eyes, hands, and feet and also of legs and body in installing, repairing, or testing equipment in confined areas such as manholes. Lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. On occasion, may be required to lift and carry items and materials weighing in excess of 50 pounds.

Work is performed inside and outside during the day, and at night as required, on high structures over water that is frequently turbulent, in the proximity of moving machinery and high tension electrical wires, and on scaffolds or slings. Occasionally, works behind bulkheads or in tunnels below water level. Employee is subject to falls, drowning, electrical shocks, injury and discomfort, burns, exposure to moving equipment, machinery, loud noises, inclement weather, and dangerous icy conditions.

Two year trial/probationary period may be required.
