Performs final review of medication (prepared by another technician) to be dispensed to inpatient areas (unit dose carts), and/or fills unit dose carts independently without secondary review. Operates and maintains complicated pharmacy equipment. Compounds and/or reconstitutes oral or external medications (non-sterile).This includes calculating and converting to proper weights and measures the amount of drug or solution to be used. Enters correct drug, strength, dosage form and quantity into the patient's medication profile (VISTA or otherwise).The medication profile is subsequently reviewed for accuracy by someone authorized to verify accuracy. Performs final verification of simple, non-sterile compounds prepared by technicians.

Answers questions from pharmacy and non-pharmacy personnel regarding drug distribution.Identifies basic therapeutic problems, such as duplicate therapy with drugs in the same class, and alerts the pharmacist to the possible need for clinical intervention.

Performs all the duties of lower graded technicians, if required. Requires a working knowledge of principles relating to controlled substances, and the requirements of medical center policy and Federal and State regulations which apply to these drugs. Knowledge of trending and analysis necessary to insure that problems associated with waste, fraud or abuse are identified quickly and reported to supervisor. Preparing and filling all inpatient and outpatient orders and requests for controlled substances. Monitors and analyzes orders and distribution patterns to identify questionable circumstances or unusual trends.Communicates potential problems to supervisor. Conducts regularly scheduled inventory of safe.

Tour of Duty: Monday - Friday 08:30 am - 5:00 pm (40 hour work week) and after hours if needed to meet the demands of patient care.

Basic Requirements

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Non citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with Chapter 3, Section A, paragraph 3g, this part).

Education or Experience. A high school diploma or equivalent.

Certification. Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board(PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above.

English Language Proficiency. Pharmacy Technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with Chapter 2, Section D, paragraph 5a, this part.

GRADE REQUIREMENTS:

Creditable Experience: To be creditable, the experience must have required the use of knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics associated with the scope of Pharmacy Technician practice.

Quality of Experience: To be creditable, Pharmacy Technician experience must be documented on the application and verified in an employment reference, or through other independent means.

GRADE DETERMINATION:

In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates:

GS-06

Experience. One year experience at the next lower level, and must fully meet the KSA's at the next lower level.

In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSA's and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSA's designated by and asterisk(*).

1. Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action.

2. Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment.

3. Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents.

4. Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products.

5. Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts.

6. Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders.

Assignments. Pharmacy technicians may be assigned to any area of the pharmacy including expanded distributive function assignments; for example assignment as team leaders for specific process improvement teams involving technical areas or performing more highly complex duties including preparation of oncology agents for clinical pharmacy specialists.For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-6.

Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting: (15-44 pounds); Moderate Carrying (15-44 pounds); Straight Pulling (less than 30 minutes); Pushing (less than 30 minutes); Reaching above shoulder; Use of fingers; both hands required; walking (up to 6 hours); Standing (up to 6 hours); repeated bending (up to 1 hour); ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13 to 16; hearing (aid permitted).
