Summary

The Physical Therapy Assistant is responsible for administering highly specialized and diversified treatment for patients with varying levels of physical and mental disabilities, and coordinating services with interdisciplinary team and providers.

Work Schedule: 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, Monday - Friday PRN weekend coverage

Responsibilities

Coordinates patient care in the Acute Care inpatient and outpatient programs. In this capacity the PTA spends at least 25% of their time performing duties associated with the Acute Care inpatient and outpatient specialty clinics. May rotate to other PM&R Clinics as needed.

Reviews charts, obtains appropriate subjective history, demonstrates ability to receive and accurately interpret information obtained, and instructions for physical therapy procedures.

Utilizing a standardized screening format, screens patients designated by the physical therapist (PT) as possible candidates for physical therapy services.

Evaluates and treats patients in diverse environments (room, clinic, outdoors, home, etc.). Uses standardized protocols/guidelines to perform patient safety evaluations data gathering, make recommendations for durable medical equipment, home environment modifications and safe practices.

Exercises independent judgment in interpreting findings of objective information gathered.

Modifies treatment techniques following physical therapy plan of care, based on patient response to treatment towards meeting established goals.

Demonstrates a full professional understanding of selective therapeutic techniques (basic and specialized) and modalities related to disability being treated.

Applies therapeutic techniques and modalities not limited to: exercises, therapeutic activities, neuromuscular re-education, Neuro-Developmental Treatment (NDT), proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF), self-care, balance, prosthetics/orthotics training, Durable Medical Equipment (DME) adjustments, wheelchair safety, mobility training, home safety, Activities of Daily Living (ADL's), DME training, heat, cold, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS), iontophoresis, phonophoresis, laser, application of bandages, etc.

Reviews discharge planning, makes recommendations, follows up on status of assistive devices/DME and coordinates follow up care with interdisciplinary team per plan of care.

Is responsible for daily electronic encounters entries, daily progress notes and daily patient care scheduling/attendance.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Education. Successful completion of an associate's degree from an accredited community college, junior college, college, or university in a physical therapy assistant education program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE).

Grade Determinations: : Completion of 1 year of creditable experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs:

1. Advanced knowledge of treatment techniques in order to assess changes in physical, mental, and/or medical status.

2. Advanced knowledge of physical therapy data collection and assessment techniques in order to perform specified aspects of patient evaluations and interventions.

*3. Skill to manage and/or maintain responsibility for a specialty program.

*4. Ability to lead a group of employees and communicate information regarding work assignments and scheduling.

*5. Ability to instruct students and manage a trainee program for PTA students.

Assignment. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. Employees at this grade level serve as senior PTAs. Candidates for assignment at this level must possess and demonstrate a level of clinical competence to serve as a consultant to other PTAs. Typical assignments for candidates at this grade level include, but are not limited to, one or more of the following:

1. Serve as a lead PTA for a group of PTAs.

2. Coordinates PTA programming responsibility for a specialty program.

3. Serves as the medical center coordinator for clinical education for PTA students, to include developing training plans, scheduling rotation assignments, providing feedback on students' performance, and participating in clinical training education for PTA students.

Physical Requirements: Should have the ability to perform repetitive physical activities: typing/keyboarding (up to 4 hours); waking and standing (up to 4 hours); bending/stooping (up to 6 hours); kneeling/ reaching, moderate to heavy lifting and carrying (up to 2 hours); etc. Sitting is required for meetings, administrative work and driving motor vehicle most of the day. Use of fingers and both hands and ability to driving are required. Work may require good physical health, normal use of arms and legs and good visual and auditory acuity. Work is performed in the home, occasionally in the ward, exercise areas, office and conference rooms, May be exposed to infectious disease, medical an psychiatric emergencies.
