This position is in the Operating Room section of the Nursing service here at the VHSO in Fayetteville, AR.

The incumbent prepares patients and the OR for complex surgical procedures.

Performs a range of nursing care duties which include transporting patients to and from the OR in a safe and secure manner, identifying patient(s) with ward personnel by checking armband, and documents.

Will use proper lifting equipment if needed making sure positioning of patients are correct.

Prepares patients for surgery by preoperative shave of appropriate operative site.

Makes observations of patient's condition, and reports deviations to the nurse or physician.

Prepares the operating room for all types of surgeries to include: abdominal surgeries, extremity Orthopedics, Urological, Laparoscopic,

Endoscopic and Laser procedures.

Sets up, operates, and maintain s diagnostic and therapeutic medical equipment such as surgical instrumentation and electric devices as part of treatment of patients.

Recognizes abnormalities and brings them to the attention of the appropriate physician or RN.

Takes results to physician and ensures original results are made part of the permanent record.

Secures the confidence and cooperation of patient during procedures.

Explains procedures, and positions patients for most standard procedures.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. Occasional weekends and off tours are possible when on call.

Physical Requirements: Duties regularly require providing manual assistance in lifting and positioning patients, most of which are stages of unconsciousness. There are extensive periods of regular and recurring standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, reaching and prolonged stretching to provide easy accessibility of instruments and supplies for the surgeon. Incumbent must be dexterous in passing instruments to surgeons without compromising principles of aseptic techniques and in a manner requiring little or no effort from the surgeon. Duties are performed in the operating rooms and Genito-urinary (GU) clinic which require special operating room attire with regular and recurring exposure to toxic and noxious gases such as methylmethracrylate, glutaraldehyde, exposure to x-rays, and pure oxygen, exposure to blood and body fluids which are often infectious, and laser beams requiring special safety precautions.

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in federal service. Specialized experience is technician experience that required application of the knowledge, methods and techniques of the position to be filled. Qualifying specialized experience for this position (which should be documented on your resume) is: Experience as a Surgical Technician or similar position in an operating room assisting with surgical procedures; using aseptic techniques to prepare and protect the sterile field during surgery; positioning and prepping surgical patients; applying sterile dressings; and handling instruments, supplies and equipment for complex surgical procedures.


One (1) full year (18 semester hours) of graduate education directly related to the work of this position as a surgical technician. Graduate education meets the specialized experience requirement ONLY in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED - If you do not submit a copy of your transcript, your application may not be processed.


Equivalent combinations of experience and education as described above to fully meet the requirements of this position. TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED - If you do not submit a copy of your transcript, your application may not be processed.

To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-07. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education.

There is no educational substitution for the GS-07 level.
