About the Position:

Kenner Army Health Clinic is a multi-specialty outpatient clinic with four outlying medical clinics staffed by over 450 military, civilian and contract personnel caring for a supported population of over 32,000 eligible beneficiaries and 70,000 students annually. Clinical services include primary care and family medicine, women's health, internal medicine, pediatric medicine, dermatology, optometry, orthopedics, physical therapy, psychiatry, psychology, social work services, nutrition services and ancillary services: laboratory, pharmacy, radiology, preventive medicine, and industrial hygiene.

Responsibilities

Serve as a technical consultant to management on industrial hygiene evaluations of the work environment.

Conduct health hazard evaluations and promote effective occupational health and safety practices throughout the wing and tenant organizations.

Conduct surveys, evaluations and auditing to identify and evaluate potential occupational health hazards using knowledge of IH principles, concepts, and practices.

Plan and conduct sampling using various instrumentation and equipment.

Review regulatory requirements prior to conducting air sampling, and assess hazards; develop sampling strategies and apply recognized standards; help with or perform sampling using indirect and direct reading instruments to quantify hazards.

Advise management on industrial hygiene issues, recommend actions to prevent or minimize health hazards, provide industrial hygiene input to risk management decision processes.

Review and evaluate plans for new construction, alteration of facilities or for new processes including new materials that are of a hazardous or toxic, nature.

Required to wear Person Protective Equipment such as masks, safety shoes, coveralls, hard hats, gloves etc.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience;

Basic Requirement for Industrial Hygienist:

Degree: Bachelor's or graduate (or higher level) degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

OR

Related Degree: Bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum.

OR

Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes applying industrial hygiene concepts, principles and practices to conduct surveys of working conditions and identify hazards; reviewing design plans and other documents for new construction and facility modifications in anticipation of workplace hazards; and developing control measures to eliminate workplace hazards. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service GS-11.

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
