The Position

The Regulatory Affairs Department is seeking a Laboratory Intern.  This position collects, records, preserves, and transports samples from field locations to the laboratory; performs basic chemical analyses; supports laboratory functions with proper cleaning, labeling, and documentation procedures.

Additional Internship Information:

Temporary position for the 2018 summer months Depending on hours worked and duration, this position may qualify for an offer of healthcare insurance benefits Duration of position may be subject to change based on District need

Essential Functions

(The essential functions listed below are not intended to reflect all duties that may be assigned to this classification.  The District may augment duties and/or essential functions at its discretion.  Additionally, some incumbents may not perform all Essential Functions.)

Collect samples and perform field analyses at industrial, stormwater, municipal wastewater and watershed monitoring sites; label, preserve, split samples; install, program, and maintain monitoring and sampling equipment; and maintain chain of custody requirements according to prescribed procedures.

  Perform basic laboratory analyses such as, but not limited to: pH, alkalinity, conductivity, turbidity, solids, and E. coli; including preparation of reagents and standards.

  Clean, wash, and maintain laboratory equipment and glassware according to Standard Operating Procedures.

  Perform data entry, sample log-in, container labeling, and documentation.

  Adhere to established QA/QC standards and accepted laboratory procedures

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE OF: 

Laboratory sampling methods and techniques Basic wet bench chemistry procedures Laboratory QA/QC Pertinent safety practices and procedures

SKILL IN:

Laboratory sampling and preservation Cleaning lab glassware, dishes, and equipment Use of computers and computer software for record keeping, spreadsheet applications and database use

ABILITY TO:

Understand and follow oral and written directions and procedures Establish and maintain effective working relationships Operate effectively in a team environment Communicate clearly and concisely orally and in writing

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.   

A typical way to obtain the required KSA's would be:

College coursework in chemistry, environmental science or engineering, or closely related science field.

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:

 Upon selection, candidate must possess and maintain a valid State issued driver's license.

Temporary employees accrue a sick leave accrual at the rate of .0334 per hour worked. Depending on hours worked and duration of the position temporary employees may qualify for an offering of Healthcare insurance benefits. Temporary positions are not eligible for paid holidays or paid time off.
