This position is located at the John Dingell VAMC. The incumbent is a leader in the transformation of health care from a disease-based model of care to a personalize, pro-active, patient-driven model of care, delivered in a Whole Health System. The core elements of the Whole Health System include empowering Veterans to identify their personal health and wellbeing goals, equipping them with self-care strategies and skills, including complementary and integrative health approaches, and creating shared goals with Whole Health clinical care teams. The Whole Health Director works collaboratively and strategically with the facility leadership, and Service Chiefs throughout the John D Dingell VA Healthcare System and VISN 10. The incumbent provides leadership in the application of the Whole Health principles and organizational processes that result in improved outcomes. The incumbent has specialized knowledge of the clinical and administrative aspects of the Whole Health system, a major VHA initiative, including the ability to foster transformation. In this position, the incumbent assists in planning, establishing, and implementing Medical Center policies and procedures. The position reports to Deputy ACOS of Primary Care.

Responsibilities

Deliver and contribute to the process of strategic planning, influencing and responding to organizational whole health priorities. This will involve responsibility for creating an annual Whole Health System Strategic Plan, identifying Whole Health system development priorities, and working with the Executive Team/ appropriate Service level chiefs, ACOS's and program coordinator and whole health steering committee.

Plan and direct the educational and clinical experience of any potential medical students, residents, and fellows assigned to the Whole Health System.

Assume a leadership role in the development and implementation of the Whole Health System's performance improvement plan.

Advocate for the Whole Health System with VHA leadership and the medical community.

Jointly select or provide input for Whole Health System team members

Providing clinical input and oversight for all patient treatment plans.

Being readily available to the team members for collaboration when medical or other problems arise.

Participating in Whole Health System team meetings.

Keeping the Whole Health System team apprised of medical care advances and practice standards.

Collaborating as needed with other Whole Health System Directors, VISN leadership, and VA Central Office (OPCC & CT) staff on program development issues.

Creating strategic partnerships with staff in CBOCs , VHA facility program directors and service line chiefs for whole health implementation.

Creating strategic partnerships and community organizations to promote health and well-being offerings within the community

Working in collaboration with Whole Health program coordinator/ Program Support Assistant /Peer support specialist/ Whole Health Coach and other members of Whole Health Team

Maintains inventory of CIH approaches offered at VHA facility, including gap analysis as it relates to CIH approaches that must be offered by VA/community per Directive 1137. This also includes developing programs to educate staff on complementary therapies like BFA , full body acupuncture.

Development and implementation of measures to ensure efficiency, timely access, appropriate triage of consults as needed and effectiveness in the designated areas of responsibility.

If needed develop annual budgetary report based on quality activity and financial information and projections as needed.

Promotion and development of measures to enable the Service to monitor Whole health system staff individual performance and to assess clinical outcomes; and addressing performance issues at Director, Team and individual level.

Provide direct patient care as determined by Primary Care Service needs.

Complete and submit reports related to whole health program to Medical Center Leadership, Network, Office of Patient Centered Care as needed.

Be trained and competent to offer one or more complementary therapies like acupuncture, yoga or other complementary modalities in the whole health clinic setting.

Work Schedule: Potential Tour of duty: 8:00-4:30 or 7:30-4:00 rotating days to include Saturdays as needed. Off tour hours may be required to conduct outreach events.

Physical Requirements: The nature of the work for this position is primarily sedentary and there are no unusual physical demands involved with completion of duties. Some travel is required.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.

Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.

Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience: Experience in complementary therapies, collaborative projects, conducting group treatment clinics.
