Advanced Medical Support Assistant
The incumbent serves as an Advanced Medical Support Assistant (AMSA) at the Donald J.Mitchell VA Clinic. S/He works physically in the Rome CBOC, located in Rome, NY, which is a satellite of the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC), Syracuse, NY. The AMSA performs a wide variety of administrative and clerical duties as a member of a health care team, utilizing multiple computer applications, as well as the integrated electronic medical record system.

Duties include, but are not limited to:
Provides administrative support to patients and clinical staff.
Develops and maintains effective and efficient communication with both patient and interdisciplinary teams, providing continuity of care.
Coordinates daily with clinicians, assisting in the support and management of patient care. Works with physicians to obtain, correct, or gain clarification of patient orders.
Sets priorities and deadlines while adjusting the flow and sequencing of work to meet both physician and patient needs.
Evaluates patient information, provides input in problem solving on operational issues, and performs administrative follow-up actions.
Addresses or accommodates patient and family needs, resolving any issues or problems as they arise..
Coordinates with physicians on travel consults used to facilitate movement of patients between facilities, advising them on information required in the consult..
Prepares patient health records, proxy paperwork, and advance directive documents that are to be entered into patient's health record and sends records for scanning into CPRS.
Updates/edits/verifies patient pre-registration information in VISTA/CPRS such as demographics, next of kin, and emergency contacts.
Answers and directs phone calls.
Performs other duties as required to fully meet the needs of our Veteran patients and to ensure successful accomplishment of the Medical Center mission.
Work Schedule: Full Time, Monday through Friday, Day tour.

Specialized Experience: One year of experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level. At this level, the MSA performs a full range of duties. Examples of specialized experience include work in a medical facility, hospital, doctor's office, outpatient, or specialty clinic performing duties such as scheduling, cancelling, and rescheduling appointments, preparing for clinic visits, verifying and updating patient demographics, and insurance information, providing customer service to patients and visitors, entering data and completing encounter forms, and knowledge of privacy act regulations and release of information requirements.
In addition to the specialized experience above applicants must be able to demonstrate the following:
* Ability to collaborate, communicate, set priorities, and organize the work in order to meet deadlines, ensuring compliance with established processes, policies, and regulations.
* Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively, both orally and in writing, in order to meet program objectives. This may include preparing reports in various formats and presenting data to various organizational levels.
* Advanced knowledge of the technical health care process as it relates to access to care.
* Advanced knowledge of managing a clinic. This includes independently utilizing reference sources, decision making, and empowering the team to collaborate and resolve problems within a complex systems environment.
* Advanced knowledge of policies and procedures associated with operational activities that affect the patient flow, patient care, and the revenue process.
* Advanced knowledge of medical terminology due to the technical nature of language utilized by clinicians.

Regular and recurring work is mostly sedentary involving sitting at a desk, although the position requires the ability to move from one geographic location of the facility to another. Some physical effort such as standing, walking, bending or prolonged sitting may be required. The work places no special physical demands on the employee.
