This position is located within the Nursing Service at the Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre, PA. The Medical Supply Technician performs independently the full range of duties required to decontaminate, clean, disinfect, sterilize, process, prepare, store, and distribute reusable medical equipment.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm. WORK SCHEDULE: 8:00 am to 4:30, approximately every 8 weeks the employee will rotate through the following shifts: 6:30 am to 3:00 pm or 7:00 am to 3:30 pm or 12:00 noon to 8:00 pm. The Service runs on a 24 hour on call schedule that is also rotated approximately every 8 weeks.

Designated Drug-Testing Position: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

Receives a full range of reusable medical supplies, instruments, and equipment from hospital wards, intensive care units, the operating rooms, Community Living Center, and Community Based Outpatient Clinics;

Decontaminates reusable items by determine the appropriate method for removing gross contamination;

Performs equipment specific cleaning processes as stated in the Standard Operating Procedure and manufacturer instructions specific to the reusable medical equipment;

Examines items and instruments for damage, deterioration, or imperfection;

Disassembles, decontaminates, and reassembles items as required;

Ensures that bio-burden testing is conducted on all endoscopes, both rigid and flexible after manual cleaning is completed;

Performs first echelon maintenance and/or troubleshoots medical equipment;

Assembles a wide variety of instrument trays and sets used for medical procedures including the operation rooms;

Performs daily spore testing and sterilizer control measures as it relates to quality assurance principles of sterilization and elimination of cross contamination and determines whether items are free of microorganisms;

Processes, assembles, and performs all phases of sterilization for intricate surgical trays and microsurgery instruments for the operating rooms;

Monitors and interprets biological challenges processed for each sterilization cycle;

Applies the Joint Commission, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and Federal Drug Administration (FDA) standards as they pertain to sterile processing and distribution of reusable medical equipment; and,

Performs other related duties as assigned.

To qualify for this position at the GS-5 level, you must meet one of the following requirements:

Experience: You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-4) in the Federal Service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Medical Supply Technician, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience includes processing, assembling, trouble-shooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing, and issuing sterile and unsterile medical supplies and equipment. You must possess knowledge of the technical names, general uses, physical characteristics, and operating conditions of medical supply items; knowledge of decontamination, cleaning, preparation, sterilization, and storage procedures; knowledge of aseptic techniques; and skill in operating a washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners, and gas and steam sterilizers. Qualifying specialized experience may have been acquired through work as an operating room technician, medical instrument technician, nursing assistant with responsibilities of sterilizing, storing, and issuing sterile/unsterile medical supplies and equipment, corpsman, or laboratory worker, where you were responsible for performing these duties. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. ~OR~

Education: Successfully completed a four-year (4) course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses directly related to the Medical Supply Technician position such as medical supply processing, storage, and distribution; sterile supplies, operating room, and surgical technician courses; or other fields directly related to the position. Combination: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education (beyond the second year) and specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. The education portion must include courses directly related to the work of the Medical Supply Technician position such as medical supply processing, storage, and distribution; sterile supplies, operating room, and surgical technician courses; or other fields directly related to the position. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation.

Physical Requirements: The person in this position usually stands and moves from one part of the room to another while performing duties. There are frequent requirement for lifting packages and bundles weighing 25 pounds from carts to storage shelves. The person in this position regularly pushes loaded carts weighing several hundred pounds.

On a regular and recurring basis, the person in this position alternates between a contaminated environment and a carefully controlled clean environment while practicing measures to prevent cross-contamination. In each environment, wears special protective clothing and hair covers, which can be uncomfortably warm. While handling contaminated medical equipment the person in this position uses impervious gown, boot covers, head cover, special decontamination gloves and a face shield. Must use padded gloves to remove carts from the sterilizers and trays from the carts, and is subject to burns from accidentally touching hot items, and to cuts from both sterile and contaminated instruments. Subject to high noise from ultrasonic equipment.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
