Summary

This position is located at the Armed Forces Retirement Home, Healthcare Services. The primary purpose of the position is to provide professional supervision and technical leadership in all facets of patient care for the Residents residing at the Armed Forces Retirement Home, Washington, DC.

Responsibilities

As the Medical Officer, you will:

Serve as an Internist with duties both as Unit Physician and Ambulatory Care Physician, with both inpatient and outpatient medical responsibilities.

Be available for consultation as needed in specialty areas.

Serve as a member of various SHC boards and committees, such as Infection Control, Utilization Review and Pharmacy and Therapeutics, etc.

Examine patients reporting to the outpatient clinic.

Make diagnoses and administer treatment, order laboratory tests and x-rays necessary to complete medical evaluations such as blood counts, urinalysis, chest x-rays, write prescriptions and doctor’s instructions for patients as necessary, recommend referral of patients to specialists or consultants of other clinical facilities.

Exercise responsibility for and plan the medical management and professional activities for assigned Unit.

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

Education: Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy from a school in the United States or Canada approved by a recognized accrediting body in the year of the applicant's graduation. A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school that provided education and medical knowledge substantially equivalent to accredited schools in the United States may be demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) (or a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country). Candidates must provide sufficient information at the time of application to determine that the educational requirements are met. Licensure: Candidates must have a permanent, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Applications must be accompanied by 1) a certified copy or photocopy of the license, 2) a notarized statement attesting to the fact, or 3) a citation of the license number and State issuing it.

Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in an institution accredited for such training. For purposes of this standard, graduate training programs include only those internship, residency, and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada. Listings of accredited programs are published yearly in the Directory of Residency Training Programs and the Yearbook and Directory of Osteopathic Physicians.

Experience: In addition to meeting the basic requirements above, applicants must have 3 years of graduate training or equivalent experience and training.

SPECIAL NOTE: Long-term care experience and/or interacting with geriatric patients is highly desired.
