The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) CNS serves as a clinical resource for evidence-based nursing practice and health care outcomes within his/her area of clinical specialization and expertise. Functions as an expert clinician and patient advocate; leads the advancement of nursing practice, and identifies opportunities for and lead organizational and system change. Contributes to the development, implementation and evaluation of clinical nursing programs and serves as a consultant for nursing professional development. Implements best practice by leading/participating in research and process improvement activities. Provides consultative leadership in defining standards of care, and developing new practices and establishing standards of care, procedures and policies.
Master's or Doctorate Degree in nursing from an accredited CNS program with sub-specialization in specific area of nursing as assigned. Two years of clinical and/or leadership experience.
Current License by the Nevada State Board of Nursing to Practice as a Registered Nurse. Meets the definition of Clinical Nurse Specialist per NAC 632.300, if not APRN, agrees to obtain APRN licensure within 1 year of hire. Basic Life support (BLS) certification. May require one or more of the following: Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification (ACLS); Trauma Nurse Core Certification (TNCC); Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS); Neonatal Resuscitation Protocol (NRP); additional Certification in the Specialty Area assigned.
Additional and/or Preferred Position Requirements
Minimum 2-5 years clinical experience.
Surgical / Women'sCare (L&D)experience a plus OR
Emergency Department / Acute Care Experience
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Physical Requirements
APRN and RN standards of practice in area of specialization; Clinical Nurse Specialist core competencies of direct care, consultation, systems leadership, collaboration, coaching, research and ethical decision making; current evidence and standards of nursing care within specialty area to include regular maintenance through continuing education; department and hospital safety practice and procedures; patient rights; age specific patient care practices; infection control policies and practices; handling, storage, use and disposal of hazardous materials; department and hospital emergency response policies and procedures.
Providing care for the patient with acute, critical and/or complex chronic illnesses; advanced assessment, synthesis of diagnostic data, identifying individualized goals and outcomes, developing a plan of care, implementing treatments, and evaluating of patient's progress toward the attainment of goals and outcomes; consulting for advanced nursing care of complex patients in acute care; working in three spheres to improve patient outcomes through excellence in nursing practice; implementing evidence-based clinical guidelines, care paths, policies, and procedures and tailors them to specific populations. Leads system change to promote health outcomes, system efficacy, and a healthy work environment through evidence based practice; using computers and related software applications; communicating with a wide variety of people from diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with all personnel contacted in the course of duties; efficient, effective and safe use of equipment.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Mobility to work in a typical clinical setting and use standard equipment, including stamina to remain standing and/or walk for extended periods of time, and strength to examine and treat varied patients, vision to read printed materials and a VDT screen, and hearing and speech to communicate effectively in person and over the telephone. Strength and agility to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
