Summary
Operates independently and without direct supervision as the technologist responsible for the performance and coordination of all sonographic and diagnostic radiology examinations. The purpose of these exams is to achieve diagnostic studies so that proper diagnosis and treatment may be effectuated. Schedules patients for examinations. Evaluates the nature of critical and emergency procedures and rearranges patients scheduled to accommodate them.

Responsibilities
Advise the Staff Radiologist or referring physician of significant abnormalities that would require their immediate attention and visualization while the patient is undergoing examination.
Perform ultrasound examinations of the abdomen, neck, chest and extremities, retroperitoneal space for acquiring high quality examinations that assist in the diagnosis and treatment of patient disorders.
Participate in the training of physicians, students and radiology technicians so that these individuals may acquire an understanding of the principles of ultrasound and how it relates to other diagnostic exams.
Make multiple simultaneous settings and adjustments in operation of equipment to insure accurate results. Based on Radiologic findings, determines necessary ultra-sonic procedures to yield definitive diagnostic findings.
Review new development in the field and recommends to supervisor those that would improve the operation of the section.
Perform procedures and examinations in hospitals or clinics under the direction of radiologists and other medical officers.
Responsible for the quality and quantity of radiographic exams performed to assure an elevated level of acceptability of radiographs while minimizing patient dosage.
Stay abreast of technological advances in the field of Radiology and incorporates these advances and incorporates these advances into in-service educational programs for the nursing and physician staff.
Responsible for explaining exams to competent patients in terms the patient will comprehend, as well as understanding potential hazards that may occur because of the exam.
Receive and interpret radiology requests.
Properly identify the patient and the images.
Practice radiation safety to reduce exposure to patients, staff and self.
Able to vary tests or treatment procedures as needed to compensate for patient's individual medical conditions and body habits.
Interview patient and obtain pertinent medical history and precise medication dosage, as it pertains to the ordered procedure.
Perform radiographic in the operating rooms providing diagnostic x-rays to the surgeons and professional staff on patients that are unable to be x-rayed tin the Radiology Service due to incapacity or surgical procedures.
Responsible for cleanliness and stocking adequate levels of supplies in assigned areas.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements
:

* Certification-
All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R).
* Education
-Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate's degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from schools accredited by the ARRT and certification by the ARRT in radiology.

Grade Determinations
: Diagnostic Radiology Technologist GS-9
Experience:
At least 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-8)
level directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. Note:
The candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*)
a.
Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures;
b.
Skill to demonstrate appropriate techniques to gather relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers;
c
. Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure;
d.
Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography;
e.
Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions; and
f.
Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients.

Physical Requirements:
The Diagnostic Radiology/Ultra-Sound Technician position will require moderate lifting (15-44) pounds, light lifting under (15 pounds), moderate carrying (15-44 pounds), light carrying (under 15 pounds), pushing, pulling, walking (8 hours), standing (8 hours), repeated bending (5 hours).
