Responsibilities

These positions involve a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed below represent the full performance level of GS-6. At the GS-5 grade level, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS-6. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds.

NOTE: The positions located in Mather and Redding, CA are part-time (20 hours/week). The salary listed represents full-time employment and will be pro-rated based on the actual number of hours worked each pay-period. Likewise, benefits and time-off accrual will also be prorated and based on your part-time work schedule.

These positions are located within the Northern California VA Health Care System in Martinez, CA, Mather (Sacramento), CA and Redding, CA. The Medical Supply Technician performs independently the full range of duties required to process and prepare medical instrumentation and semi-critical reusable medical equipment (RME) used in the medical center and associated Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs).

The major duties include but are not limited to:

Maintains strict adherence to the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in all areas where reprocessing of reusable medical equipment (RME) occurs;

Performs proper examination and testing of items used during the manual decontamination and assembly processes;

Adheres to established manual and mechanical disinfection protocols, which includes ultrasonic cleaning and automated washer disinfector usage as appropriate;

Assesses instruments for damage, deterioration and/or imperfections (i.e. cracks, pitting, discoloration, etc.);

Cleans critical, semi-critical and non-critical RME and any accessory items such as tubing and bottles;

Loads RME items and any other required control tests on carriers, ensuring proper placement of items for thorough sterilization;

Operates sterilizers, cleans and tests equipment to determine whether correct parameters were obtained and processes control tests (i.e. Bowie Dicks test, bacterial spore strips, etc.);

Identifies and assembles instrument trays/sets including those for treatment and diagnostic care and for full range of surgical and clinical operations;

Accommodates requests from medical/clinical services personnel for instruments, special trays or variations from standard ones;

Maintains reprocessing supplies and stock levels preventing operational delays; and

Performs other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: There is 1 Full Time vacancy in Martinez, CA; 1 Part Time vacancy in Mather (Sacramento), CA and 1 Part Time vacancy in Redding, CA.

Martinez, CA - Full Time, Monday through Friday from 12:00pm to 8:30pm and may be requested to work other shifts (9:00am to 5:30pm).

Mather, CA - Part Time, Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7:00am to 3:30pm

Redding, CA - Part Time, Tuesday and Wednesday from 11:30am to 8pm and Thursday from 4pm to 8pm.

*All positions will rotate weekends and holidays*

Designated Drug-Testing Position: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The work requires standing and walking during the entire workday, frequent bending and stretching and lifting of moderately heavy supply items.

On a regular and recurring basis, the employee normally works in a well-lighted, clean environment that is adequately climate controlled. The work involves moderate risks and discomfort such as working near or with equipment which is noisy or generates heat such as ultrasonic units, gas and stream sterilizers and automatic washers. The employee must comply with safety and health precautions using protective clothing such as gowns and caps. The employee uses insulated gloves to remove carts from sterilizers. The employee is subject to burns from accidentally touching hot items. The hazards of working around minute quantities of sterilizing gases are unknown. The work area is occasionally noisy due to the rumbling of carts.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position at the GS-5 grade level, you must meet one of the following:

EXPERIENCE: You must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in Federal Service. Specialized experience is defined as experience that has provided you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of a GS-5 Medical Supply Technician. Qualifying specialized experience includes: experience in processing, assembling, trouble-shooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing, and issuing sterile and unsterile medical supplies and equipment. The applicant must possess knowledge of the technical names, general uses, physical characteristics, and operating conditions of medical supply items; knowledge of decontamination, cleaning, preparation, sterilization, and storage procedures; knowledge of aseptic techniques; and skill in operating a washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners, and gas and steam sterilizers. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work as an operating room technician, medical instrument technician, nursing assistant, corpsman, or laboratory worker. ~OR~

EDUCATION: You must have successfully completed a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses directly related to the work of this position in order to meet the specialized experience required. This education must have been obtained in an accredited technical school, college or university. To qualify based solely on education, you must include a copy of your transcripts. ~OR~

COMBINATION: You must have a combination of specialized experience as described in A and education as described in B which totals at least one year. Note: Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to 1 year of specialized experience. To qualify using a combination of experience and education, you must include a copy of your transcripts.

To qualify for this position at the GS-6 grade level, you must meet one of the following:
