This position is being filled under the Pathways Internship Program which is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with paid work opportunities in agencies to explore Federal careers while still in school. The full performance level (FPL) of the target position that the Recent Graduate can be non-competitively promoted to is a GS-05.

Promotion to the full performance level is neither guaranteed nor implied and will be based solely on your ability to satisfactorily perform the work of the position, existing work at the higher grade level, and recommendation by the position's supervisor.

Responsibilities

As a NPS Visitor Use Assistant, incumbent is responsible for collecting appropriate fees at a park visitor center contact station following established accountability guidelines for handling government funds. Incumbent operates an electronic cash register, performs opening and closing shift functions, issues entrance receipts, and park passes in accordance with established guidelines, and verifies entrance receipts and various passes for validity dates. Incumbent serves as a front-line representative of the agency. In many instances, the incumbent is the first and only contact the visiting public has with a NPS employee. Incumbent works at the Fort Moultrie visitor center. As a NPS Visitor Use Assistant, incumbent is responsible for providing current, accurate information to visitors concerning the NPS area and other surrounding areas of interest. Incumbent explains the area's recreational opportunities, including NPS interpretive services, concession operated facilities and services, and hiking trails; distributes maps, brochures and other printed material; informs visitors of potential safety hazards; and provides directions and routes of travel through the park. Incumbent provides public orientation and explanations of current park events, resource management projects, management policies and legislative updates on issues affecting the natural, historical and/or cultural preservation of the area.

This position is full-time.

The entire period served under the Intern Program counts as a trial period.

You may be required to travel 1 to 5 days per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.

You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.

Recent Graduate Program Requirements: Students MUST submit transcripts with conferred or degree earned date (unofficial transcripts are acceptable). If selected, official transcripts will be required.

An Individual Development Plan (IDP) will be completed within 45 days of appointment to track the Recent Graduates' career planning, professional development, and training activities.

Selectee will be required to sign Recent Graduates Participant Agreement.

Within the first year of employment, the incumbent will be provided a minimum of 40 formal hours of training.

The incumbent will be assigned a mentor within 90 days of appointment.

Qualifications

To qualify for the Program, applicants must have completed all requirements of an academic course of study leading to an associates, bachelor's, master's, professional, doctorate, vocational, or technical degree or qualifying certificate program from an accredited educational institution within the 2 years preceding the closing date of this announcement.

General Experience: Applicant must possess one year of General Experience equivalent to at least the GS-03 level. General Experience is (1) Any type of work that demonstrates the ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Experience is experience that includes collecting and accounting for fees, greeting visitors, disseminating information and providing directions or other clerical/office work.

OR

Education: Applicant must possess two years of education above high school (60 semester hour or 90 quarter hours) which included at least 12 semester hours of directly related courses, such as in American history, science, public speaking, parks & recreation, education, or communications. (You must submit a copy of your transcript)

OR

Combination of education and experience: Applicant must possess an equivalent combination of education and experience. For example, I have 6 months of general or specialized experience (50% of the experience requirements for this position and grade level) combined with one year of education as outlined above (50% of the education required to qualify), which included at least 6 semester hours of related courses such as American history, science, public speaking, parks & recreation, education or communications (50% of the directly-related courses required). Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as varies.

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution

with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

You will NOT be considered under Pathways unless you provide supporting information from your school. Documentation may be provided in letter format from your academic advisor, school counselor, admission office, etc. to prove enrollment OR it may be provided in the form of several official documents from your school such as a copy of your official transcripts and a copy of your class schedule for next semester. Copies of documents from your school website are acceptable if they contain all relevant information as listed above. Letters from advisors or other school officials must be on school letterhead.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities

to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

Working Conditions: Work is often performed in small, outdoor structures with open windows which results in exposure to extremes of temperature, rain, snow, wind, and direct sunlight.
