Summary

The National Gallery of Art is seeking a highly motivated individual to join our Operations and Maintenance Department to support the Gallery's computerized Building Automation System. The Building Automation System technical team is a dynamic group with front line responsibility for maintaining optimal environmental conditions for the care and display of irreplaceable works of art. Located on the National Mall in Washington, D. C., the National Gallery of Art's East Building, West Building, and Sculpture Garden to include over 1.3 million square feet of world class museum space.

The incumbent performs technical duties requiring practical knowledge of mechanical, electrical, electronic, and computer engineering principles as they relate to the control of Heating, ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems. Advanced knowledge of electric Direct Digital Control (DDC) systems for HVAC control is required. Advanced knowledge of computer software application development using the Tridium Niagara Framework platform is also required, as is a practical knowledge of computer network principles.

The applicant will utilize their knowledge to analyze, evaluate, and draw conclusions in order to troubleshoot, repair and modify complex HVAC control systems. Specific duties include, but are not limited to: developing and implementing software for control of HVAC systems, modifying existing DDC control software, troubleshooting network communication errors, faulty sensor and field wiring issues.

The incumbent will:

Calibrates field instrumentation to restore manufacturer's stated accuracy.

Troubleshoots electronic and pneumatic control systems and components using software-based programming tools, electric multi-meters, and other common hand held calibration and testing devices used in HVAC field.

Programs, edits and implements software control strategies in DDC controller hardware using Tridium Niagara AX Workbench programming tool for Tridium JACE controllers.

Reports on progress of technical assignments to management.

Specialized experience is at least one year of experience, equivalent in responsibility to the GS-11 grade level programming sequences for mechanical and electrical systems that include 8 PID loops and 50 software and physical points.

Ability to perform redesigns and design modifications to HVAC control systems.

Ability to troubleshoot electrical and mechanical HVAC systems using computer software applications.

Knowledge of computer communication networks.

Skill in developing technical reports, briefing materials and presentations.

Physical Requirements: The work relating to event activities can be physically demanding such as standing for long periods of time and considerable overtime may be required during peak periods. Also, two or three evening events may fall within the same week which requires a flexible work routine.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience. Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Time-in-Grade: Current Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement to receive consideration under merit promotion procedures.
