The incumbent provides broad range of technical support functions in pharmacy. Performs outpatient pharmacy technician duties necessary for the pharmacy operation. Assists pharmacists in filling medication orders by selecting, packaging, and labeling the proper drug and dosage. Fills drugs orders as assigned; maintains drug accountability. Maintains files of dispensing records and action profiles. Maintains files of dispensing records and action profiles. Maintains ward stock inventories. Conducts and documents monthly ward inspections. Determines pre-packaging and compounding needs for pharmacy dispensing. Packages, documents, and properly labels all pre-packaged units for dispensing. Properly packages, labels, documents and verifies accuracy of finished product. Fills medication orders using pharmacy automation. Maintains, cleans, and calibrates pharmacy automation. Responsible for maintaining all products requiring compounding either in small batches for a single prescription/medication order or in bulk preparation to be dispensed as more than one prescription/medication order. Monitors and analyzes drug use patterns when necessary. Observes and consistently displays a good sterile technique in the manufacturing process. Utilizes standardized pharmacy automation to fill prescriptions and/or medication orders.

Basic Requirements:

U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Must have a high school diploma or equivalent, or at least 3 months experience.

Must have a certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). (A copy must be provided with application)



Grade and salary will be determined by a Professional Standards Board (PSB). in addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met:

At the GS-6

grade level, you must possess one year experience at the next lower grade level of and must fully meet the Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) at the GS-5

level and demonstrated the following KSA's:

KSA - 1. Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action.

KSA - 2. Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment.

KSA - 3. Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents.

KSA - 4. Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products

KSA - 5. Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts.

KSA - 6. Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication

Pharmacy technicians may be assigned to any area of the pharmacy including expanded distributive function assignments; for example assignment as team leaders for specific process improvement teams involving technical areas or performing more highly complex duties including preparation of oncology agents for clinical pharmacy specialists. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-06.

Physical Requirements:

Applicants must met the physical standards for the position. The work requires sitting, walking, standing, bending and stooping, pulling an pushing and lifting/carrying of items up to 20 to 50 lbs. and be able to maintain self control in difficult stressful situations. A physical examination prior to placement is required.None
