Summary

The Radiology Service nurse is a professional who manages the care of outpatients and inpatients who present to the Radiology Service for diagnostic procedures. These procedures include CT scans, MRI scans, ultrasounds, and interventional radiology procedures to include all aspects of clinical nursing care to include moderate sedation, and PO sedation, IV's, administration of rectal and oral contrast, etc. Working in conjunction with and coordinating care with other departmental staff, physicians, technologists and health care providers from all services, the Radiology nurse facilitates care to restore stability, minimize complications, and achieve optimal patient outcomes within a dynamic environment. In order to accomplish this, the professional nurse uses the Nursing Process in the coordination of care for patient and families.

The Radiology nurse is a registered nurse who is accountable for the provision of patient care in Radiology Service, which includes all diagnostic procedures. He/she must demonstrate the ability to work effectively as a team member and must be able to communicate, listen, gather and report crucial data in a manner that enhances patient outcomes.

The Radiology nurse is responsible for overseeing and ensuring that all necessary pre-procedure, intra-procedural, and post procedural documentation is completed on exams they are involved with.

Radiology Service supports professional growth through educational activities, attendance and participation on hospital committees, QI projects or membership in professional organizations. The nurse is required to complete annual competency exams, annual nursing mandatory skills training, maintain ACLS certification, and complete annual moderate sedation training.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 7:30 AM to 4:00 with required call rotation nights, weekends, and holidays with regular shift on call days being 8:00 AM -4:30 PM.

Responsibilities

Completes intake assessment on patients and communicates significant information to team members.

Ensures pre-procedure checklist is completed including documentation of pertinent labs, consents, medications, and timeouts as well as pre-procedure, intra-procedural, and post-procedural documentation.

Conducts reassessments on the patient throughout the procedure, during the recovery phase and PRN to identify rapidly changing conditions.

Functions independently in performing more complex treatments, procedures and advanced technology specific to the scope of care in Radiology Service.

Coordinates patient discharge to AMU, home or inpatient status post procedure.

Provides individualized patient care consistent with identified knowledge of patient's strengths and limitations.

Is proactive in identifying potential crisis situations and responds appropriately.

Initiates referrals and/or consultations as appropriate to achieve the multidisciplinary plan of care

Functions as a consult person to physicians, nursing and other personal for complex patient care issues.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing ( ACEN

) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education ( CCNE

). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

Preferred Experience: A Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and 1 year of recent (within the last 6 months) RN experience in an acute care setting such as Interventional Radiology, Catheterization Laboratory (Cath Lab), Endoscopy/GI Lab, Emergency Room, Operating Room, Intensive Care Unit AND Current BLS and ACLS Certification AND At least 1 year of Moderate Sedation Experience.

Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.

Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.

Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.

Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.

Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.

Physical Requirements: The incumbent must be able to perform all activities of the position without restriction. This position involves considerable standing, walking, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting and turning. It requires repositioning patients and assisting with patient transfers to wheelchairs/stretchers. Mechanical devices when available are required to be used for heavy or difficult to lift patients. The work may involve pushing or lifting weight in excess of 50 pounds and going up and down flights of stairs. The position requires visual and auditory acuity at a level to provide safe and effective nursing care. The positions requires the nurse to work for periods of time with arms above shoulder level or with the neck in a fully flexed or extended position and the ability to physically control or protect him/herself from physically abusive patients.

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time Nurses, and Nurse Anesthetists at the rate of 8 hours for each full biweekly pay period.
