Responsibilities

This Incumbent works for the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System in Reno, Nevada within the Nutrition and Food Service. Under the supervision of the Food Service Systems Manager, or designee, the incumbent plans, coordinates, directs and monitors all phases of Food Service and Production section. Employee may work early, late or relief shifts as well as weekends and holidays. In the absence of the Food Service Systems Manager, the incumbent is responsible for the operation of Food Service and Production and administrative duties within Food Service and Production Section only. Independently makes decisions within their scope of responsibility for the Food Service and Production Section. Duties include, but are not limited to:

Responsible for attendance, production and efficiency of Cooks and Food Service Workers

Coordinates the work of the food production staff to ensure subsistence and supplies are maintained

Provides relief coverage as a cook, on an as needed basis.

Conducts on-the-job training and service orientation for new and existing staff.

Prepares schedules for Food Service Workers and Cooks, and ensures there is adequate coverage.

Makes recommendations on menu items, tests recipes, and ensures portion control guidelines are followed.

Ensures Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) standards are being followed at all times

Assists in the development of in-service programs and standard operational procedures, and makes suggestion for revision as deemed necessary.

Initiates, directs and supervises the completion of quality controls such as test tray evaluations, customer/patient satisfaction surveys, plate waste studies and other department performance metrics and consults with the Food Service Systems Manager on discrepancies and results.

Work schedule: Full Time, 40 hours per week, varying shifts, including weekends and holidays

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: This position requires constant walking, standing, bending, stooping and moderate (45 pounds) to heavy (50 pounds) lifting. Must be able to move advanced food delivery carts (AFD) that weigh up to 575 pounds; properly use a cart tugger puller to assist in AFD cart movement. Work may be repetitive for short periods of time. The person in this position may be required to perform heavy work, such as scouring and scrubbing large-size cooking utensils and pushing heavy carts and trucks in unloading, storing, and delivering supplies. May be required to work on ladders and use power-cleaning equipment including a steam wand. May be required to use safety devices/equipment provided for the completion of some tasks such as tuggers, shoes, gloves, disposable gowns, masks, and coats.

Additional information

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
