Physical Demands / Work Environment :
Work may take place in extremely remote environments and may require primitive camping and living skills for upwards of two weeks in duration. The work is performed outdoors in rugged terrain; to include very steep, wet, muddy, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces; positions require physical exertions, such as, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Individuals should be capable of working alone, or with other people, during early morning hours, night, or during the day.

The incumbent is responsible for performing a variety of duties including, but not limited to, the following:
Range Aids work under the supervision and guidance of professional range and natural resource specialists providing technical support and assistance in range conservation, range management, and range improvement. Performs the following or duties of similar complexity:
Monitors distribution and movement of livestock. Observes, records, and reports any signs of unauthorized grazing use/trespass animals and assists in roundup of trespass livestock. Makes observations of wildlife use. Serves as a team member for range inventory efforts. Includes duties such as mapper and entails collecting, compiling, and recording vegetation data on each site write-up area (SWA). Assists with vegetation counts by species and/or life form from small plots or transects to determine such information as survival of seedlings, species present, distribution of plants, volume of growth. Provides impressions of range conditions, and similar observations. Collects and records data in range studies such as condition and trend use, utilization, actual use, and climatological data. Collects, compiles, and records water sources data (wells, pipelines, reservoirs, etc.) and boundary lines (allotments, fences, natural barriers, etc.) for range inventory mapping efforts. Inputs data on grazing allotments into the automated system. Provides assistance in identifying needed improvement projects (wells, reservoirs, fences, vegetation projects, etc.) and inspecting/inventorying condition of existing projects. Occasionally uses an engineer’s level or transit and/or GPS as well as instruments needed to make rough measurements necessary in locating conservation projects in relation to established markers, computes yardage of simple earth dams and dikes or similar projects.
