Summary The South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS) is comprised of two inpatient campuses: the Audie L. Murphy Memorial VA Hospital in San Antonio and the Kerrville VA Hospital in Kerrville, Texas. The STVHCS serves one of the largest primary service areas in the nation, with 63 counties, and is part of the VA Heart of Texas Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN 17), with offices located in Arlington, Texas. Providing a service to Veterans with a working staff of more than 3,100 employees, South Texas provides health care services for 93,000 Veterans. The STVHCS is a facility providing primary, secondary and tertiary health care in medicine, surgery, psychiatry, and rehabilitation medicine. It also supports a 90 bed Extended Care Therapy Center, a 30-bed Spinal Cord Injury Center, an eight-bed Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, and a Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center. Affiliated with the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, the system has an active ambulatory care program with numerous satellite outpatient clinics. Duties You will work as a Nursing Assistant in the Progressive Care Unit. Duties may include but not limited to knowledgeable in obtaining vital signs to include pain score, intake\/output, daily weights with bed scale or upright stand up scale, blood glucose testing. Usage of appropriate equipment for safe patient handling to include but not limited to sequential compression device (SCD), bladder scanner, Buck's traction, lift equipment. You will adhere to all reusable medical equipment standard operating procedure to include participating in equipment inventory. You will implement appropriate interventions to prevent\/reduce hospital acquired pressure ulcers and patient falls under the direction of the RN\/LVN. You will perform procedures within their scope of practice according to policies and standard procedures i.e. colostomy care, skin care, simple dressing. You may assist with surgical skin preparation to include hair clipping and holding limbs; assists nurse with any other bedside procedures as needed. You will transport\/escort patients to and from procedures; transports medications, supplies, equipment, blood and other specimens as needed. You will monitor patients according to level of observation i.e. close observation, 1:1 patients. You will participate in the quality improvement activities of the unit; participates in team huddles and meetings. You will complete all patient care assignments in a safe and timely manner.
