Summary

You will serve as a PHARMACY TECHNICIAN in the Pharmacy Department, Directorate of Ancillary Services of NAVHOSP JACKSONVILLE.

THIS IS AN EXPEDITED HIRING AUTHORITY ANNOUNCEMENT. Section 1599c, title 10, United States Code provides that the Secretary of Defense can designate positions as shortage positions and recruit and appoint highly qualified persons to these positions. This announcement is open to accept resumes from candidates interested in helping the Department of the Navy meet our mission requirements in health care occupations.

Responsibilities

Process medication orders and /or prescriptions using computerized order entry and extraction of pertinent drug data from patient chart and/or through patient interview.

Identify and resolve medication order problems to include, but not limit to, accuracy, inappropriate doses, significant medication interaction and allergies.

Adhere to essential policies and procedures, including those relating to proper use of medications and the formulary.

Preparation of parenteral medications to ensure sterility, following established techniques.

Proper handling of carcinogenic, mutagenic and teratogenic medications, following established guidelines.

Perform extemporaneous compounding and provision of bulk medications ensuring there are no chemical and/or physical incompatibilities.

Education and orientation of self and other statff memebrs to the operations and policies of the pharmacy department. May be required to support Command level training activities.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for this position, your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities, to perform successfully the duties of the position. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

Carrying out multiple aspects of total hospital pharmacy operations;

Utilizing institutional pharmacy practices; ambulatory pharmacy, unit dose distribution, sterile products preparation, manufacturing/compounding, and controlled medical procedures in a hospital environment;

Using medication information materials and clinical application of this information, (i.e. basic knowledge of pharmaceutical nomenclature, characteristics, strengths, and dosage forms of pharmaceuticals; pharmaceutical systems of weights and measures; common chemical and physical drug incompatibilities, adverse drug reactions and interactions; formulas, strengths and dosage of drugs, etc..); and

Utilizing stock control/ordering procedures to store, repack, date, distribute and/or maintain appropriate stock levels of medications/pharmaceuticals items.

********Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

Education

Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study in pharmacy, or that included at least 24 semester hours in pharmacy-related courses.

Successful completion of a course for medical technicians, hospital corpsmen, medical service specialists, or hospital training obtained in a training program given by the Armed Forces or the U.S. Maritime Service under close medical and professional supervision is creditable on a month-for-month basis for general experience.

Successful completion of pertinent specialized training courses in pharmaceutical and pharmacy practices while serving in the Armed Forces is creditable on a month-for-month basis up to the 1 year of specialized experience required for GS-05.
