Responsibilities

- Operates gasoline and/or diesel powered, heavy equipment with wheeled- or crawler-type traction such as dozers, graders, dump trucks, tractors with blades/buckets, front end loaders, backhoes, large industrial tractors with pan or scraper attachments.

- Operates one or more types of heavy equipment to excavate, backfill, grade, or level earth to rough specifications to break new ground for trails, roads, canals, pipelines, dams, or other construction sites; to push, pull, pile or load material such as sand, gravel, or earth; to clear brush, tree stumps, and rocks; and to plow snow on roads.

- Operates, as may be required, other equipment such as a jackhammer, concrete mixer, welder, and air compressor; other vehicles including two- and four-wheel drives, snow cats, and snowmobiles; and operates a variety of power tools, including chainsaws, and uses a variety of hand tools.

- Moves earth on mountains and steep slopes, graded curves and shoulders, rocky or soft ground, hilly forests, and other surfaces with similar rough features.

- Grades surfaces, compacts soils, or rolls to exact specifications on flat or rolling terrain.

- Services equipment routinely according to the manufacturer's recommendations/maintenance schedule or to industry standards and maintains proper records.

- Participates in hand labor to construct small concrete structures including such activities as excavation; forming, placing, and finishing concrete; backfill and the compaction of backfill; the construction of other structures such as culverts, flumes, and gates; and the repair of the collector pipeline.

- Monitors and analyzes piezometer and drain monitoring installations as required by the Safety of Dams (SOD) and Safety Evaluation of Existing Dams (SEED) Programs at various project facilities.

- Performs seepage monitoring for the 15 dams, maintains the Dam Seepage Monitoring System (computer database), and prepares an annual report to be submitted to the State of Colorado.

- Collects monthly reservoir elevation and release data for the State Engineer Office’s use in water right administration, makes flow/storage calculations and regulates gate adjustments.

WORKING CONDITIONS/ENVIRONMENT: Work may be performed in forested areas up to approximately 10,000 feet elevation. Work is performed in all types of weather, often in an open driver’s seat or platform. Because large, complicated equipment is operated on steep hills, slopes, and grades, the operator at times is exposed to the possibility of the equipment overturning. Subject to noise, vibration, dust, and fumes from the motor and exhaust.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Heavy physical effort is used by the operator in constantly reaching, bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, feet and legs to manipulate different sets of controls to operate the equipment and attachments. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of equipment and the jerking and jolting from operating over rough surfaces. The physical effort is strenuous due to the large pieces of equipment and the requirement for frequent adjustments under adverse conditions. Because of the arrangement of some of the controls and attachments, the operator is frequently required to work in awkward or strained positions.
