Responsibilities

Joining the Customs and Border Protection Office of Information and Technology will allow you to use your expertise developing, implementing and ensuring compliance of IT solutions. This position starts at a salary of $134,789 (GS-15, Step 1) to $164,200 (GS-15, Step 10). Apply for this exciting opportunity to strengthen Homeland Security.

In this Supervisory Information Technology Specialist (APPSW) position, you will be a key member of Homeland Security professionals responsible for leadership and supporting the design, documentation, development, modification, testing, installation, implementation, and support of new or existing applications software for CBP organizations. Typical work assignments include: Analyzing information to determine, recommend, and plan the development of a new application or modification of an existing application

Approving the design of systems that meet current and future business needs; enhancing and optimizing new and existing software

Making recommendations based on trends in emerging technologies for enhancements to software and hardware solutions to enhance customer experience

Providing supervisory and administrative guidance to subordinates.

Qualifications

Basic Requirement:

Individuals must have IT-related experience demonstrating each of the four competencies listed below. Attention to Detail - Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail.

Customer Service - Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services.

Oral Communication - Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.

Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.

Along with the four competencies listed above you must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience described below to qualify based on experience.

GS-15:

You qualify at the GS-15 level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience at the GS-14 level or equivalent performing duties directing the implementation of high-level IT applications software requirements; defining the scope of IT applications software plans and policies; leading a multi-functional development project in software analysis, design,development, and implementation for a new system or a major enhancement to an existing system; leading IT applications software development efforts to identify and correct weaknesses in critical performance parameters; and resolving critical IT applications software issues affecting the configuration of the IT infrastructure.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Residency:

Supervisory Probationary Period:

You may be required to serve an 18 month probationary period upon appointment and complete a supervisory training course within 12 months of assignment.

Supervisory Training:

All newly appointed, permanent GS-15 Senior Managers are required to complete mandatory training. The training will be scheduled by the Office of Training and Development within the first 90 days of appointment. The duration of the training will include five (5) weeks of in residence training in Harpers Ferry, WV. Note: This training may be waived if previously completed.

This position is not covered under the bargaining unit.
