Part Time Psychiatry Midlevel Provider (Mental Health Clinic)
This position can be filled with a Psychiatric certified Nurse Practitioner or a Physican Assistant and is located at the Dwight D Eisenhower VA Medical Center, Mental Health Clinic located in Leavenworth, KS. This position provides patient care to our Veteran mental health patients.

Major duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Complete outpatient psychiatric assessments and follow-up care
Conducts and documents findings on initial, periodic, episodic, and/or annual health histories and/or MSE's, and/or physical examinations on patients seen in the clinical setting
Documents findings and follow-up of all care provided, using the VAEKHCS electronic medical record, dictating notes and summaries as required, and seeking proper countersignature, when indicated
Orders and/or intreprets appropriate lab tests, x-rays, EKGs, and other diagnostic studies/procedures as appropriate for diagnosing and/or medication management
Detects and evaluates any significant change in patients' medical and/or psychiatric condition, treating as indicated
Reviews medications for clinical need, simplification and possible drug-drug interactions and adjusts as indicated
Collaborates with the client/family to establish physical, mental, cultural and environmental factors that facilitate or impede realistic goals and activities
Provides education and counseling of the patient and the patient's family in preventive care, medical and/or psychiatric conditions and the use of prescribed treatment and drugs
Maintains phone contact with patients, families and home care agencies as indicated
Maintains updated Problem List and current health status for each patient visit as evidenced by interim progress notes and summaries in patient's medical record
Serves as a mentor, consultant and coordinator for nurses and other health care professionals in clinics, hospital units, and home/extended care if such service operates in VAEKHCS and assignment includes this responsibility
Coordinates health care services; participates on committees and professional groups
Participate in quality assurance programs
Primary Monday-Friday day shift, however incumbent may be responsible for providing on-call coverage and coverage on off-tours (including nights, weekends and holidays) based on the needs of the organization. The incumbent may be asked to assist in other sub-specialty areas within the department.

Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Basic Requirements
Graduate of a Master's Degree School of Nursing program accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
* License and Registration:
A nurse practitioner must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State, Territory, Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. License must be current, full, active and unrestricted.
Nurse Practitioners must maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. The certification must be a Psychiatric certification.
Physician Assistant Basic Requirements
Applicants must be a graduate of a PA training program, or of a surgical assistant program which is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor organizations;
* have a Bachelor's degree from an accredited PA training program or in another health sciences related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
Current and continuous certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required for employment in VHA. Note: Recent PA graduates who are eligible to take the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE) may be employed by VA on a temporary basis (38 U.S.C. 7405), for a period not to exceed two years, as provided in VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section G, Paragraph 5.
Experience working in an In- and/or Out-Patient Mental Health facility.
Nurse Practitioner Grade Determinations
: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
* Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
* Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.
Physician Assistant Grade Determinations:
The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
* Full Grade. In addition to meeting the basic requirements individuals appointed to this grade must meet all the following requirements:
(1) Experience / Education. None beyond the basic requirements in paragraph 2 of this standard.
(2) Clinical Competencies
(a) Clinical Proficiency
1. Provides effective care to patients characterized by the use of sound judgment in assessing, planning, implementing, documenting, and evaluating patient care for assigned patients. This includes possessing the skill and competency to obtain thorough medical histories, perform comprehensive physical examinations, order appropriate diagnostic studies, interpret and analyze medical data, establish diagnoses, formulate and implement treatment plans, and modify treatment plans when appropriate.
2. Works effectively and makes appropriate requests for assistance from the assigned physician and recognizes complex patient care situations where referral is appropriate.
3. References quality improvement information and organizes patient care needs to assure safe, efficient and cost-effective care.
4. Initiates effective actions in emergencies.
(b) Professional Development
1. Obtains additional knowledge and skills appropriate to the practice setting to improve performance.
2. Provides patient education in an effective manner.
(c) Ethics. Safeguards patient privacy and confidentiality. Provides care in a nonjudgmental, non-discriminatory manner respecting the patient's values and beliefs.
(d) Interpersonal Skills. Works effectively with patients, families, caregivers, and other professional and support personnel.
1. Demonstrates awareness of research application to practice.
2. Researches medical literature and applies evidenced-based medicine to improve clinical practice.
b. Intermediate Grade. In addition to meeting the basic requirements, candidates must meet all requirements described in this standard for Full Grade through VA employment or non-VA PA positions with equivalent scope and complexity. Individuals appointed or advanced to Intermediate Grade will have demonstrated the ability to analyze and solve more complex medical problems and meet the following requirements:
(1) Experience / Education
(a) 1 year of professional practice as a PA; or
(b) Successful completion of a PA post-graduate residency program accredited by ARC-PA or by the U.S. Armed Forces; or
(c) A Master's degree from a PA training program certified by ARC-PA or in another health-related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
(2) Clinical Competencies
(a) Clinical Proficiency
1. Effectively treats patients with more complex medical problems requiring a higher degree of clinical skill and competency than that expected of the previous grade.
2. Performs more complex diagnostic and therapeutic procedures requiring skills and competency, as applicable to the assignment, beyond that expected in the previous grade.
3. Practices with a higher degree of autonomy and seeks guidance from the assigned physician less frequently than expected of the previous grade.
4. Evaluates the delivery system of patient care within the area of assignment, presents findings and recommendations, and contributes to changes that enhance the quality and timeliness of care.
(b) Professional Development
1. Acquires knowledge and skills to maintain expertise in area of practice.
2. Shares medical literature research findings with colleagues to enhance patient care delivery.
3. Participates in educational activities to improve clinical knowledge and enhance role performance.
