Job Description
SUMMARY \rThe Medical Assistant is part of a\rprimary care team and is responsible to assist with coordination and providing\rpanel management services to patients within the practice.  Supports the improvement of health outcomes\rthrough scheduling preventative and maintenance care appointments, educating\rpatients, building the medical home between patients and practitioners and\renhancing communication and continuity of care. \rThe Medical Assistant works with the Care Team to increase patient’s\raccess to appointments, services and health care resources thereby, supporting\rpatient’s self-care management goals. \rAssists with prior authorization processing.  Assists in examination and treatment of\rpatients under direction of Physician by performing the following duties.   \r \rESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the\rfollowing. Other duties may be assigned\r1.     \rInterviews patients, measures vital signs, such as\rpulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight, and height, and records\rinformation on patients' charts.\r\r 2.     \rAdministers injectable and oral immunizations.\r 3.     \rPerforms routine lab duties such as Hct, Urinalysis\rdipstick, pregnancy test, strep antigen screen, Mantoux test, Tympanometry,\rEKG, Snellen, Audiometry, HGB A1C, O2 SAT, blood lead Serum glucose and\rNebulizer treatments.\r\r 4.     \rPerforms venipuncture and prepares lab specimens for\rpick up.\r 5.     \rMaintains lab and order records.\r6.     \rOperates electrocardiograph (EKG), and other equipment\rto administer routine diagnostic test or calls medical facility or department\rto schedule patients for tests.\r\r 7.     \rGives injections or treatments, and performs routine\rlaboratory tests.\r8.     \rAssists in minor surgery and other specialty surgical\rand medical procedures.\r9.     \rMaintains, cleans and sterilizes all instruments, as\rneeded. Maintain autoclave log.  Checks all sterile items for integrity\rand sterility prior to use.  Performs\rmonthly spore tests.\r 10.  Ensures\rassigned exam rooms are cleaned and restocked with medical supplies and\rmaterials to include sharps containers and biohazard bags.  Orders and maintains medical supplies, as\rwell as reporting any supply problem or defective equipment to supervisor\r11.  Review\rand prep next day charts for providers, with I-Care and current Medication list\r12. \rEnsure that patient\rrecords are accurate and complete, ensures that encounter forms are completed\rproperly. \r  13.  Maintains\rcomputerized PLC registries, files reports as needed by department.  (women, immunization, asthma, health)       \r\r 14.  Prepares\rappropriate forms as required for the patient’s medical treatment, including\rradiology and laboratory slips and referrals based on findings of physician.\r\r 15.  Gives\rcounseling, care and follow-up instructions; health education and materials to\rpatients under the direct supervision of a physician, podiatrist or licensed\rnurse.\r\r 16.  Assists\rin answering telephones and taking messages, making appointments, filing,\rcompleting statistics and making referrals.\r\r 17.  Maintains\restablished departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance\rprograms, safety, and infection control standards.\r

The requirements listed below are representative\rof the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. \r \rEDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE \rMust be a graduate of a vocational or technical college in\rmedical assisting. \rDemonstrates clinical competence.\rAssumes responsibility for own personal and professional\rgrowth. \r \rSKILLS \rAbility to react calmly and effectively in emergency\rsituations. \rAbility to read and comprehend simple instructions, short\rcorrespondence, and memos. \rAbility to write simple correspondence. \rAbility to effectively present information in one-on-one\rand small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the\rorganization.\rAbility to apply common sense understanding to carry out\rinstructions furnished in written or oral form.\r \rCERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS \r Must be a graduate\rof a vocational or technical college in medical assisting. \rCPR certification must be acquired within six months of\rappointment and renewed on a regular basis as so stipulated by the\rcertification.\r \rPHYSICAL DEMANDS\rWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is\rregularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach\rwith hands and arms; and talk or hear. \rThe employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, and\rcrouch.\rThe employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10\rpounds.\rSpecific vision abilities required by this job include\rdistance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.\r \rCUSTOMER RELATIONS\r1.       Responds\rpromptly and with caring actions to patients and employees.  Acknowledge psychosocial, spiritual and\rcultural beliefs and honor these beliefs.\r2.       Maintain\rprofessional working relationships with all levels of staff, clients and the\rpublic.\r3.       Be\rpart of a team and cooperate in accomplishing department/organizational goals\rand objectives.\r \rQUALITY MANAGEMENT\r1.      Displays\rknowledge of normal signs of human development and ability to assess and\rprovide age appropriate care\r\r Contribute to the success\r of the organization by participating in quality improvement activities.\r\rSAFETY\r\r Maintain current knowledge of policies and procedures as they relate\r to safe work practices.\r Follow all safety procedures and report unsafe conditions.\r Use appropriate body mechanics to ensure an injury free environment.\r Be familiar with location if nearest fire extinguisher and emergency\r exits.\r Follow all infection control procedures including blood-borne\r pathogen protocols.\r\rHIPAA/COMPLIANCE\r\r Maintain privacy of all patient, employee and volunteer information\r and access such information only on a need to know basis for business\r purposes.\r Comply with all regulations regarding corporate integrity and\r security obligations.\r Report unethical; fraudulent or unlawful behavior or activity.\r Specify privileges and responsibilities of employment, including\r compliance with an adverse incident reporting system.\r\r5.      Maintains\rclient case files in accordance with all applicable laws and\rregulations and IHC policies.\r \r \rIndian Preference\rshall be given in accordance with IHC’s Policies and Procedures Section 3, Part\r3-1, Paragraph 5
