The incumbent supervises the Durham VA Pharmacy Technicians assigned to Pharmacy Section and is responsible for all activities and functions generated by the section on a daily basis. The Supervisory Pharmacy Technician schedules, assigns coverage to meet work demands and hospital goals, trains employees, monitors performance, performs quality-checks, develops work procedures, and ensures high quality service for all customers.

Basic Requirements

Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board

Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken written and spoken English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402 (d),

Grade Determinations

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE FOR GS-08 LEVEL: One (1) year of specialized experience as a Pharmacy Technician comparable to the GS-07 level in Federal service which includes experience troubleshooting operational problems; knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment; knowledge of and ability to follow written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials; knowledge of and ability to perform compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products; knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts; knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders; exercise knowledge of the most complex or difficult practices and procedures..

To be creditable, the experience must have required the use of knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics associated with the scope of pharmacy technician practice. Knowledge of human resource management policies and procedures, and the ability to supervise various levels of pharmacy technicians and other technical personnel.

Ability to apply management and leadership principles.

Ability to communicate orally and in writing.

Extensive working knowledge of the pharmacy operation.

Ability to assess staff needs and provide appropriate training.


PTCB certification is required at this grade level.

Pharmacy Technicians Functional Requirements: Heavy Lifting (up to 40 lbs.); Heavy Carrying (up to 40 lbs.); Straight Pulling (up to 1 hour); Pushing (1-2 hours); Reaching above shoulder; Use of fingers; Both hands required; Walking (up to 3 hours); Standing (up to 5 hours); Repeated bending (up to 1 hour); Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; Near vision correctable at 13 to 16; Hearing (aid permitted).None
