The Southern Arizona VA Health Care System (SAVAHCS) professional staff is seeking a full-time Cardiothoracic Surgeon to provide quality service in our progressive, innovative health care system for our Veteran hospital population. SAVAHCS is the principal teaching affiliate of the University of Arizona Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy. Therefore, the selected candidate must be eligible for a faculty appointment at the University of Arizona.
The incumbent will provide direct clinical services in the operating room and the Cardiothoracic care unit in the performance of Cardiothoracic procedures. He/she is responsible for providing the patient with risks, benefits and alternative treatments and securing the informed consent of the patient/family needed before conducting invasive procedures. Duties include patient care, teaching house staff and students. Candidate must have completed or plan to complete ACGME- approved cardiothoracic surgery residency training or its equivalent and have clinical experience in the broad specialty of cardiothoracic surgery including cardiac surgery, lung resection, esophagectomy, benign esophageal diseases, and minimally invasive thoracic surgery. General Thoracic experience is a plus but not the primary focus. Primary surgical focus will be on Cardiac Surgery with common cases including CABG, valve repair and replacement, aortic surgery, ablations and pacemakers. SAVAHCS is currently building a hybrid surgical Operating Room, experience with hybrid and catheter based procedures is desired. Experience with TAVR is desired with exposure to both the procedure itself as well as the development of a multidisciplinary program. Responsibilities include clinical activities supporting multidisciplinary programs in cardiology, chest oncology, research, and teaching.

Physical Requirements: Must be able to physically and mentally perform the duties in a hospital setting under normal and emergent conditions. Moderate lifting 15-44 lbs and over with assistive devices, Straight pulling, and pushing for up to 6 hours per day; reaching above shoulder; use of legs and arms, both hands required, standing or kneeling up to 8 hours per day; near vision correctable at 13 to 16 to Jaeger 1 to 4; Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; hearing aid permitted.

Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
Proficiency in spoken and written English.
