TEMPORARY NTE 1039 HOUR APPT: This position is a Full-Time temporary position not-to-exceed 1039 regular hours (about 6 months) in a service year. Position may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs. Individuals selected under this vacancy announcement are eligible for rehire in subsequent service years. The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for Gettysburg National Military Park is April through September, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. PLEASE NOTE: The National Park Service's (NPS) policy on Less than 1040 appointments (also known as temporary seasonal appointments) has changed. Responsibilities

The Laborer Leader, WL-3502-04 serves as a working leader of a crew of laborers in performing the work of landscape and trail preservation and maintenance.

This position, Laborer Leader, WL-3502-04 serves as a working leader of up to a 5 person crew of WG-4 laborers. Lead positions on a regular, recurring, and substantially full time and continuing basis. Lead and instruct other employees performing work in the following trades: landscaping, carpentry, masonry, motor vehicle and equipment operation and laboring. Lead fellow employees in the proper use and operation of mowers, power tools and motor vehicles used in grounds, trails, road and landscape operations. As a work leader, the incumbent teaches and demonstrates trade methods and techniques to crew members and volunteers led and sets the pace when working alongside of them. The incumbent teaches and demonstrates the construction and repair of a variety of historic and non historic type fencing; proper work methods in operation of fence construction, mowing and trimming operations, raking, sweeping, trail maintenance and repair and landscaping using walking or riding power equipment. Keeps crew informed on procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives. Ensures self and crew comply with all park and federal safety regulations. Keeps the supervisor informed on status and progress of work, causes of work delays, and any other issues. Responsible for ensuring that the work is performed within the standards of acceptance and within the timeline given.

WORK SCHEDULE: You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.

Qualifications

Qualifying experience: Knowledge and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform work as a Laborer Leader, WL-3502-4 without more than normal supervision and the ability to Lead or Supervise. Experience is defined as the knowledge and experience that demonstrates the ability to independently lead a crew to completion of a variety of landscape preservation tasks that include: 1)Operation of landscaping equipment, trucks, trailers and tractors; 2) trail maintenance; 3)fence repair and construction; 4)tree removal and 5)small construction projects; and 6)Lead or supervise.

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT)

Physical Demands: Moderate to heavy physical effort may be required in operating equipment, in lifting 45-100 pounds (i.e., lifting trash containers, moving tables and benches, loading and unloading cargo, in repairing/constructing roads, trails and fences; using hand tools to dig and backfill ditches, etc.). This position is required to walk, climb, bend, crouch, stretch, sit, work in cramped areas, work on ladders//scaffolding, in trees at varied heights, etc.

Working Conditions: The work of this position is performed mostly outdoors, sometimes in dusty, wet, windy conditions. In extreme temperatures occasionally reaching 90 plus degree temperatures with high humidity. Work is performed on uneven terrain and steep slopes presenting a high degree of exposure to potential injury and equipment damage. At times work is performed in an open driver's seat which could exposure the operator to exhaust fumes depending on weather conditions. There is a chance of receiving injuries such as broken bones, lacerations, sprains, bruises, etc. There is a chance of receiving long term injuries to joints or muscles as a result of repetitive movements being completed several times a day for several days. Incumbent is exposed to poison ivy, a variety of biting and stinging insects and occasional reptiles.
