The Histotechnologist is responsible for performance of the full range of basic duties to include but not limited to:

Responsibilities
Preparing and processing surgically removed tissue, autopsy tissue and body fluids using complex steps of fixation, dehydration, clearing, infiltration, embedding, microtomy, staining and coverslipping.
Recognizing improperly processed tissue and taking corrective action.
Performing fixation, the stabilization of protein, on tissue and body fluids.
Sectioning paraffin blocks of tissue on the rotary or motorized microtome.
Performing staining techniques using routine hematoxylin and easin stains, and special histochemical stains that are necessary to enable the pathologist to arrive at a diagnose.
Performing preparation of Frozen Sections for rapid interpretation/diagnosis of tissue during surgery.
Operating equipment such as microscopes, microtomes, tissue processor, crysotat, embedding center, stainers and reagent recyclers.
Performing and documenting the quality control and maintenance of all equipment used in the histology section.
Communicating issues of non-compliance and prepares problem occurrence and error correction documents for equipment and specimen issues.
Overseeing performance of Immunohistochemical (IHC) using appropriate controls, multiple detection systems and multiple instruments.
Performing gross examination of biopsies ans surgical specimens, requiring focused attention to detail to assure accurate differentiation and reporting.
Collecting, harvesting and processing control material used in Histology.
Establishing and monitoring reference values and ranges for quality control blocks to assure the accuracy and validity of results.
Preparing samples for transport to reference laboratories for testing unavailable on site.
Accurately stores, maintains and orders antibodies, reagents and supplies used for IHC and Special Stain procedures.
Promotion Potential:
The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.
Work Schedule:
Monday - Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm
Tour of duty may change based on the needs of the Medical Center.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/30/2018.
Time-In-Grade Requirement
: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-07 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. For the GS-09 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-07. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. Note:
Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
Basic Requirements:
Applicants must have successfully completed a bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree:
* Major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
In addition to the basic requirements, applicants must meet the grade requirements below:
To qualify for the GS-07:
You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
* Specialized Experience:
You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
* Knowledge and skill in histologic technique and equipment sufficient to accomplish orientation, freezing, sectioning, and rapid staining of fresh surgical specimens.
* Knowledge of IHC staining procedures, including tissue reactivity with each specific IHC stain,
* Experience performing a variety of IHC stains; OR,
* Education
: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have completed one year of graduate-level education in a related field, or superior academic achievement; OR,
* Combination
: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education in which the quality of the combination of education and experience must be sufficient to demonstrate that the applicant possesses the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform work in the occupation.
To qualify for the GS-09
: You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
* Specialized Experience:
You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-07 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
* Knowledge, skill and experience in histologic technique and equipment sufficient to accomplish orientation, freezing, sectioning, and H&E; staining of formalin fixed surgical specimens;
* Significant experience in performance of histology procedures.
* Knowledge and skill in histologic technique and equipment sufficient to accomplish orientation, freezing, sectioning, and rapid staining of fresh surgical specimens, experience in all aspects of processing, sectioning and staining frozen section specimens.
* Knowledge of IHC staining procedures, including tissue reactivity with each specific IHC stain, experience in performance of a variety of IHC stains.
* Knowledge of human tissue anatomy sufficient to gross simple biopsy specimens, experience in specimen grossing; OR
* Education
: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed two years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or possess master's or equivalent graduate degree in a related field; OR,
* Combination
: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education in which the quality of the combination of education and experience must be sufficient to demonstrate that the applicant possesses the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform work in the occupation.
Certification in Histology is preferred.

Physical Requirements:
The work requires regular and often continual physical exertion such as standing for long periods of time while preparing specimens and solutions and staining slides at the laboratory bench, and also while cutting tissue at the rotary or freezing microtome (cryostat). Periodic lifting of moderately heavy supply items and small equipment is also required. The work requires a high degree of manual dexterity and visual acuity as well as a high degree of tolerance and ability to work under stress that, at times, may be irregular or somewhat constant. The demands of accuracy and timeliness in reporting results to the pathologists and clinicians responsible for patient care is an ever present responsibility and constant concern of responsible technologists. At times, immediate action is required to produce information, solve a technical issue or interact with a patient or VA employee. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. Finger dexterity required to manipulate small pieces of laboratory equipment and tissue in performing tests. Color discrimination required to select proper stains in order that diagnostic qualities of the tissue can be properly defined, and to make color comparisons of specimens and tissues being tested.
