The Claims Specialist performs a variety of complex specialized clerical and/or financial duties in the Victim Services Division. Prepares and processes specialized documents, provides information to the public and other agencies, responds to concerns from the public, and other agencies and handles processing of claims and requests.
Minimum Education and/or Experience:
High school diploma or GED and three (3) years of experience performing specialized clerical or bookkeeping duties. Post-secondary education may substitute for up to two (2) years of the required experience.
Specialized Training, Certifications, and/or Other Special Requirements:
Must possess, or have the ability to obtain by the time of hire, a valid Arizona driver's license.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Generally accepted accounting procedures and principles (GAAP) and generally accepted auditing standards (GAAS), financial analysis techniques and reporting of data. Document management and maintenance techniques and procedures.
Negotiating successfully with customers. Performing duties with speed and accuracy without immediate or constant supervision. Managing multiple tasks/priorities in a high volume office. Developing and maintaining positive and productive working relationships with co-workers and customers using principles of good customer service.
Communicate with victims, providers and outside organizations to effectively convey information. Use moderate to complicated mathematical calculations. Use data entry techniques to manage account information. Utilize computer programs including Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and Word. Independently and appropriately interpret, create, and/or process a variety of administrative paperwork with minimal errors. Maintain confidentiality of sensitive and personal materials and/or information. Perform duties under critical deadlines. Learn different computer applications and become highly proficient quickly.
Preferred Education and/or Experience:
Experience in medical billing procedures. Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) preferred.
Primarily in office setting in high volume, fast-paced environment. Requires long periods of sitting while completing paperwork and computer activities. May require travel to and from job related locations during the course of a scheduled workday, subject to County policies regarding use of County vehicles and/or private vehicles used on County business. May require the ability to lift/push/pull/carry up to 20 pounds.
Essential Job Tasks
Interprets and applies County and Office policies/procedures for processing voluminous quantities of invoices and monthly payments, screens invoices for accuracy, maintains and creates confidential documents, obtains appropriate approval as required, processes invoices for payment, and manages associated records Identifies, develops and recommends new or revised processes. Initiates correction of errors as they are discovered. Prepares and maintains claims files. Resolves complaints and discrepancies associated with claims including: initiating requests for additional documentation or information, researching historical activity and applicable policies, and interpreting and applying policies, procedures, and rules Stays within budget limits to be cost effective. Types, files, photocopies, scans, and faxes miscellaneous documents.

Holidays and Leave
Maricopa County observes ten paid holidays per year. Most County employees accrue vacation (starting at three weeks per year for full-time employees) and sick leave (starting at one hour for every 30 hours worked for all employees). Employees also receive paid leave for other needs such as jury duty, civic duty, and bereavement.
Medical, Prescription, Behavioral Health, Dental, Vision, and Flexible Spending Accounts
We understand how important health, oral hygiene and vision are to maintaining a good quality of life. We also know our employees want to have the freedom to choose plans to best meet their needs. Eligible employees may choose from four medical plan options, an HMO, PPO, and two HDHP (High Deductible Health Plans) with a health savings account. When employees enroll in medical coverage, they are automatically enrolled in prescription and behavioral health coverage as well. There are three dental plans from which to choose, two PPO plans and a pre-paid dental plan that functions like an HMO. As is the case with medical, the plans range in cost, flexibility, and network of providers. For those who wish to set aside pre-tax dollars to pay for eligible healthcare and dependent care expenses, the flexible spending accounts are suitable for that need.
Life and Disability Insurance
Because life sometimes takes unexpected turns, the County offers life insurance coverage to help employees and their loved ones in the event of death. Basic life and basic accidental death & dismemberment insurance equivalent to one times an employee's annual base salary is provided at no cost, with the option for employees to purchase additional coverage including spouse and child life insurance. Disability insurance is available to replace a portion of an employee's salary should they experience a short-term illness or injury.
Eligible employees are covered by one of several State-sponsored retirement pension plans, including the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) and the Public Safety Personnel Retirement System (PSPRS). Additionally, there's the option to contribute to a 457b deferred compensation retirement savings plan that provides employees with a variety of investment opportunities. For those employees who retire from the County and from their retirement system, and have accrued 1,000 or more hours of sick leave, the County makes a $10,000 contribution to a Post-Employment Health Plan set up on their behalf to be used for payment of eligible out-of-pocket healthcare expenses.

Wellness and Ergonomics

By meeting a set of criteria, employees and their families can get reimbursed for participating in a Weight Watchers Program. Employees have access to smoking cessation programs and health-related classes on various topics including nutrition, exercise and stress management. Employees located downtown benefit from an onsite pharmacy and clinic. Every fall, flu vaccines are offered to employees at various County locations. The Ergonomics team at Maricopa County works to assist departments and employees in preventing and alleviating pain and discomfort associated with the work environment. They provide guidance on the proper approach to workstation set-up, as well as ergonomic trainings and individual ergonomic evaluations.
