This recruitment will remain open for six (6) months .

The City of Portland's Bureau of Development Services is seeking a Building Inspector II to perform inspections of structures to ensure compliance with building related codes and ordinances covering new construction or alteration and repair of existing structures. Some Building Inspector IIs also inspect mechanical (cooling, heating and ventilating) installations for compliance with mechanical codes and ordinances. Your work will be performed independently in the field and requires the ability to make well-informed decisions using discretion, judgment, and code knowledge. Work is also performed in the office requiring strong written and oral communication skills.
As a Building Inspector II
, you will effectively and competently utilize computers with multiple programs, smart phones, and other office equipmentwhen checking permit applications, advising contractors and homeowners on code and permit requirements, and returning phone calls and emails to customers. Your ability to establish and maintain effective and equitable working relationships with the public and co-workers is essential in this position as is the ability to manage and complete daily workload as assigned. Fluency in a second language is desirable, but not required.
The current vacancies are in the Bureau of Development Services (BDS) Commercial Inspections Section. This recruitment may be used to fill additional vacancies in the BDS Residential Inspections Section, as well as vacancies in the BDS Commercial Inspections Section.

To Qualify
The following minimum qualifications are required for this position:
Skill and experiencein reading and interpreting building and/or structural and mechanical plans.
Knowledge and experience applyingthe practices and materials used in building construction and/or heating and ventilating systems as they apply to residential structures.
Ability and experienceinteracting effectively to problem solve and partner with citizens, community groups and/or contractors.
Ability and experience exercising tact and diplomacy in dealing with internal and external customers.
Ability and experiencepreparing reports, performing records research, writing letters, and inputting and retrieving information using computer software.
Applicants must also possess:
A valid state driver's license and an acceptable driving record
An Oregon Inspector Certification (OIC) and
An Oregon A-Level Structural Inspector Certification (SIA) or equivalent and
An Oregon Residential Structural Inspector Certification (CAS) or equivalent.
Special Requirements
Residential Inspections Section
- Building Inspectors assigned to the Residential Inspections Section are required to complete an in-house training program leading to Residential Inspector certifications in electrical, mechanical and plumbing within five years from date of assignment.
Commercial Mechanical Section
- In addition to the special requirements listed above, Building Inspectors assigned to the Commercial Mechanical Section are required to possess an Oregon A-Level Mechanical Inspector Certification(MIA).
