This medical supply technician position is in the Sterile Processing Service (SPS) of the Minneapolis VA Health Care System located in Minneapolis, MN. The medical supply technician will provide support in the handling of a wide variety of medical equipment, scopes, and tools during the initial stages of the sterilization process,.

Work Schedule: Evening 3:00pm-11:30pm; Nights 11:30pm-8:00am. One weekend per month and holidays. There may be part time positions available.

Responsibilities

Decontaminates the full range of reusable medical and surgical supplies, instruments, scopes, and medical equipment

Uses proper personal protective equipment (PPE)

Determines the appropriate method for removing gross contamination

Disassembles and reassembles medical equipment and instruments

Operates various equipment such as ultrasonic cleaners, cart washers, washer disinfectors, scope washers and leak testers

Ensures the integrity of equipment to promote patient safety

Follows established guidelines and manufactures instructions

Utilizes universal precautions

Prepars, assembles, wraps and packages trays and sets used in wards and in ORs

Selects appropriate methods of sterilization

Stores and issues items

Other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

Do you possess six months of general and six months of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of a Medical Supply Technician? To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-03 grade level of Federal service. Specialized experience includes: Experience in processing, assembling, trouble-shooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing, and issuing sterile and unsterile medical supplies and equipment. The applicant must possess knowledge of the technical names, general uses, physical characteristics, and operating conditions of medical supply items; knowledge of decontamination, cleaning, preparation, sterilization, and storage procedures; knowledge of aseptic techniques; and skill in operating a washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners, and gas and steam sterilizers. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work as an operating room technician, medical instrument technician, nursing assistant, corpsman, or laboratory worker

OR

Possess successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in courses such as medical supply processing, storage, and distribution; sterile supplies, operating room, and surgical technician courses; or other fields related to the position.

OR

Possess equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience are also qualifying.

IMPORTANT:

A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements:

The employee ususally stands and moves from one part of the room to another while performing duties. There is a frequent requirement for lifting baskets of stainless steel instruments weighing 25 pounds from floor level to chest level and occasional requirements for lifting baskets and cartons weighing 50 pounds. Dexterity and strength are required in lifting and positioning supplies on metal carts. The employee regularly pushes loaded carts weighing several hundred pounds, aligns them on tracks leading to automatic transport systems in sometimes crowded quarters and hallways, and works them over slight rises such as door sills. From time to time there will be bending, twisting and pulling of equipment, carts and trays.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave:

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
