Summary

The Transition to Practice Program is designed for the post graduate registered nurse who has completed an entry level nursing degree at the diploma, associate degree, bachelor's degree, or Master's degree level. Classes are held at the Malcolm Randall VA Medical Center in Gainesville, FL. The program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

The training program was developed to support the post graduate registered nurse during the first year of practice in an acute care, behavioral health or long-term care setting. The post graduate registered nurse will participate in an orientation program and be assigned to a qualified preceptor who will work closely with them during the unit based clinical orientation. The length of clinical orientation will vary according to the needs and progress of the nurse. Clinical experiences and didactic sessions are scheduled during the year to facilitate transition and achieve competency in key knowledge, skills and responsibilities of a registered nurse. Transition to Practice Registered Nurses are required to attend all scheduled learning experiences and complete required projects and written assignments.

The program design and content are guided by: Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education's (CCNE) Standards for Accreditation of Entry to Practice Nurse Residency Programs (CCNE, 2015).

Work Schedule: Must be available to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays.

Responsibilities

Transition to Practice Nurses are expected to:

Begin employment on November 12, 2018.

Have an active, non-restricted RN license.

Attend classes and activities as assigned.

Complete assignments within the required time frame.

Be available to work as scheduled on assigned units (Shifts may be 12 hours, 8 hours, or a combination of both).

Work week will vary, but includes weekdays, weekends and holidays. Shifts vary, but will include nights/days/evenings (Please note- many openings for entry level nurses will be on evening/night shift only. (Preference for scheduling is based on staff seniority).

Attend graduation recognition ceremony. Upon completion of the 12-month program, participants who successfully complete the program requirements will be honored and presented with a certificate of completion.

Basic Requirements

* United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

* English Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve indirect patient care positions unless they are proficiency in basic written and spoken English.

* Education:

* Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. -

OR -

* The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) -

OR -

* In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

* Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia (BEFORE START DATE).

* Degree for initial entry to practice professional nursing conferred no earlier than

November 2017.

* Preferred Experience: No previous work experience as a licensed Registered Nurse.

Grade Determinations

: (This position is designated for a Nurse I grade only)

The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:

* Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.

* Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.

* Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.

* Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.

* Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.
