About the Position:

This position is for a permanent full-time Forester GS-0460-11 with the Installation Management Command (IMCOM), Directorate of Public Works, Environmental Division, Natural Resource Management Branch located at Fort Carson, CO.

Responsibilities

As a Forester you will perform work requiring professional knowledge of forestry science in the Directorate of Public Works, Natural Resource Management Branch (NRMB), at Fort Carson.

You will provide technical assistance to a wide range of assignments associated with the fields of forestry, wildlife, horticulture, soil conservation, revegetation, and wildland fire management.

You will inventory, plan, evaluate, and manage each forest resource including timber, soil, land, water, wildlife and fish habitat, minerals, forage, and outdoor recreation in support of the mission of Ft Carson.

You will protect resources against fire, insects, disease, floods, erosion, and other depredations; valuates, manages and protects forest lands and properties.

You will develop new, improved, or more economic scientific methods, practices, or techniques for accomplishing the forestry program.

Occasional travel - Business travel up to 10% may be required.

Other Requirements: Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.

Selectee must pass a required physical entrance evaluation.

Selectee must pass a criminal history background check.

Selectee must be able to obtain and maintain both a state driver's license and a Government vehicle operator's permit to drive vehicles up to 5-ton heavy equipment and/or emergency response vehicles up to a 1,500 gallon water tender.

Selectee may be required to work nights and weekends with compensation/overtime.

Selectee must be able to successfully complete a Wildland Firefighting course (S130/190) within 6 months of employment. Must be able to obtain red-card eligibility to fight fire after completion of the course. Annual NWCG recertification through attendance of mandatory classes and seminars is necessary. Must be able to pass an annual fire fighter physical test and maintain a current NWCG red card at the arduous level.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Educational Requirements: The Forester occupation has specific educational requirements which apply to all positions. Education above high school level must have been completed in a U.S. college, university, or other educational institution that has been accredited by one of the accredited agencies or associations recognized by the Secretary, U.S. Department of Education. Transcripts are required at the time of application.

Degree: forestry; or a related subject-matter field that included a total of at least 30 semester hours in any combination of biological, physical, or mathematical sciences or engineering, of which at least 24 semester hours of course work were in forestry. The curriculum must have been sufficiently diversified to include courses in each of the following areas:

Management of Renewable Resources -- study of the science and art of managing renewable resources to attain desired results. Examples of creditable courses in this area include silviculture, forest management operations, timber management, wildland fire science or fire management, utilization of forest resources, forest regulation, recreational land management, watershed management, and wildlife or range habitat management.

Forest Biology -- study of the classification, distribution, characteristics, and identification of forest vegetation, and the interrelationships of living organisms to the forest environment. Examples of creditable courses in this area include dendrology, forest ecology, silvics, forest genetics, wood structure and properties, forest soils, forest entomology, and forest pathology.

Forest Resource Measurements and Inventory -- sampling, inventory, measurement, and analysis techniques as applied to a variety of forest resources. Examples of creditable courses include forest biometrics, forest mensuration, forest valuation, statistical analysis of forest resource data, renewable natural resources inventories and analysis, and photogrammetry or remote sensing.

OR

Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in forestry, or at least 30 semester hours in any combination of biological, physical, or mathematical sciences or engineering, of which at least 24 semester hours were in forestry. The requirements for diversification of the 24 semester hours in forestry are the same as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

AND

Specialized experience required: applying forest management knowledge and skills in the field; preparing forestry plans and reports; managing forestry related projects and/or studies; and evaluating information to identify impact on forest resources and recommend plans in response to the findings. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required specialized experience in order to qualify. For this job, you may qualify if your education meets the definitions below:

Ph.D. degree or equivalent doctoral degree

3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D.
