DUTY STATION: The duty station is at the John Cochran division; however, the duty station may be changed to one or multiple associated VAMC locations within the metropolitan St. Louis, MO area based on the needs of the medical center.

The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) functions as the professional leader of an interdisciplinary health care team and possesses the administrative leadership necessary to promote interdisciplinary cooperation. In collaboration with the Nurse Manager (NM), the ANM functions as a supervisor and assumes accountability for the operational functions of 6 North (6N). The ANM is responsible for creating a positive work environment which enhances care delivery and professional development of clinically competent staff. . The ANM responsibilities include demonstration of the knowledge and skills necessary to facility and maintain care appropriate for the patients admitted to 6N. The incumbent should be familiar with the care of 6N patients, protocols, and daily operations and supervises care in accordance with established standards and hospital policies and procedures, as well as, accepts responsibility and maintains accountability for own actions and for professional and personal growth. The ANM demonstrates the ability to assume leadership in a patient centered program, and possesses the ability to establish effective communication with patients, families, visitors, and other members of the interdisciplinary team. The ANM will function in the clinical role at least fifty percent (50%) of the time which may include but is not limited to charge nurse, relieving staff for meetings, breaks and call-in supplementation. Clinical role will also include education and mentoring in the patient care areas as well as taking assignments and helping with the general demands on the unit.

Duties of the ANM will include but not limited to:
Demonstrates effective leadership in assigned area and understands processes, procedures, standards, methods, and technologies related to assignment; collaborates and works well with others.
Serves as an assistant with line authority to the nurse manager in providing leadership and direction to nursing staff
Acts as the Nurse Manager during times of Nurse Manager absence, by directly supervising staff who provide care which compensates for or assists in meeting the health-related self-care demands, and/or enhancing or developing self-care
In collaboration with the nurse manager is responsible for the administration, management, supervision and evaluation of both nursing care and nursing personnel on the unit
Communicates clearly, orally and in writing, and maintains staff confidentiality
Providing unit coverage when needed (charge nurse, staff relief or taking an assignment); administers nursing care, medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines
Assisting the Nurse Manager in formulating and managing staff scheduling and accurately entering data into Acustaf
Utilizes appropriate position descriptions / functional statements, Performance Standards, and Qualification Standards to provide input for staff performance evaluations to Nurse Manager on Title 38 and Title 5 (GS) employees.
Assures that staff documentation is accurate indicating patient findings, assessments, and care provided in the medical record focusing on established performance standards.
Demonstrates sound judgment in problem/conflict resolution skills and in daily overall unit operations
Works in partnership with the union and adheres to EEO principles
Assists nurse manager in planning and conducting regularly scheduled unit staff meetings; encourages open communication and verbalization of options when identifying and resolving problems, facilitates resolutions through appropriate channels.
Participating on unit, service and medical center committees and task forces to improve nursing practice and patient care; disseminating applicable information to the 6N staff.
Active participation at the unit/program/facility level quality improvement processes and initiatives

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing ( ACEN
) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education ( CCNE
). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
1. Bachelor's Degree required.
2. Recent acute care experience with a minimum of 3 years of medical/surgical experience
3. Medical Surgical certification required or must be obtained within twelve months of selection for the position in order to remain in the Assistant Nurse Manager role.
4. BLS and ACLS certification required.
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.

The Physical requirements of this position include the following tasks which may be performed intermittently: lifting of up to 50 lbs. (3 hours), sitting (2 hours), standing (4 hours), walking (8 hours), climbing (1 hour), kneeling (3 hours), bending/stooping (3 hours), twisting (2 hours), pushing/pulling (6 hours), simple grasping (8 hours), fine manipulation (8 hours), reaching above the shoulder (4 hours), and operating machinery (8 hours).
