DUTIES

This position is located in the Patient Services at the VA Boston Healthcare System. you will serves as a national Research and Development center for medical research. Your responsibility is to perform duties in telephone operator. Submits reports to management, coordinates work flow, and provides needed training to ensure successful daily work center operations. Major duties and responsibilities include:

Operates alerts for major systems malfunctions or failures relating to the physical plant heat, electrical power, water and telecommunication systems;

Provides coordination of medical and psychiatric emergencies (Codes Blue and Green);

Monitors of critical alert systems for the three large campuses;

Provides customer service with greater understanding of the functions of the Medical Center;

Operator responds must function in a calm and professional manner to all emergency situations;

Provides coordinating communications during Code Yellow (Missing patient);

Provides within coordination of ambulance calls for medical emergencies (911);

Provides within coordination crisis communications of patients (suicide calls);

Provides within coordinate of communications with engineering during elevator malfunctions;

Provides various forms of communications (radio, alarm, overhead announcements (at any of the campuses);

Performs all other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: WHEN Hours, 8 hour rotating shifts: 8 am-4:30 pm or 4 pm-12 am or 12 am-8 am

Qualifications

To qualify for this position at the GS-4 grade level, applicants must meet one of the following:

Experience: You must have one (1) year of progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled. Experience may include: working as a receptionist or telephone operator; obtaining the necessary information to direct calls appropriately; communicating effectively using clear enunciation; using a computer to provide clerical support; and working efficiently under pressure of time and stressful conditions. monitored and response to Oxygen alarms, telephone systems, major and minor rectifier, temperature and humidity alarms, generator alarms, Fire alarms, panic alarms and ICU code box alarms monitored and response to Oxygen alarms, telephone systems, major and minor rectifier, temperature and humidity alarms, generator alarms, Fire alarms, panic alarms and ICU code box alarms, responsible for maintaining an up to date On Call Sheet for the Operating Room responsible for conducting the Code pager test two (2) times during the day and evening shift as well as a radio check during the night shift. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties performed, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The position requires good eyesight, and prolonged sitting in order to process calls or perform administrative tasks. Since calls are of varying difficulty and received at a rapid pace the tempo of pressure creates unusual demands on the operator. The mental stress is much more demanding than the physical stress because of the split decisions that must be made as a police or fire alarm activates, telephones ring, and radio communication requesting instructions or information. The telephone operator must have a keen sense of hearing in responding to numerous audible/visual signals of wire communication receivers, and occasionally weal radio transmissions or signals. This is an essential position and the Telephone Operator must be able to attend and perform their duties during declared emergencies (weather & other disasters). This may require prolonged scheduled work hours in support of the facility mission and to maintain 24/7 operations which can lead to fatigue. Work area is well lighted and heated; however, the worker is continually exposed to discomforts such as limited space, various odors and dirt form solvents and chemicals used to perform his/her job assignments. Precaution for safety must be fully exercised by the worker at all times. When working in the environment of the computer room, workers is exposed to lower temperatures a noise levels resulting from mechanical operations (computers, large air conditioning units, printers, disk and tape drives, etc.). it must be noted that each location has facility alarm systems that must be monitored 24/7 and any mechanical failure (heat/power/air conditioning), must be endured by the Telephone Operator as monitor functions for these cannot be re-located to another space writing and external to each unit.
