Joining the Customs and Border Protection Office of Facilities and Asset Management will allow you to participate in the maintenance, repair, and construction of facilities and tactical infrastructure. This position starts at a salary of $23 (WG-10, Step 1) to $31 (WG-10, Step 5). Apply for this exciting opportunity to strengthen the Department's ability to perform homeland security functions by being part of a team of maintenance personnel.
In this Maintenance Mechanic position, you will become a key member of Homeland Security professionals. Typical work assignments may include:
Performing building maintenance, construction and repair tasks that require knowledge and application of a variety of trade practices associated with such occupations as electrical, plumbing, painting, carpentry, pipefitting, air-conditioning and refrigeration;
Building plans, wiring diagrams, and engineering drawings, and responsible for planning and laying out the routing, placement and arrangement of industrial or similarly complex systems, circuits, controls, and equipment;
Completing installations, modifications, and repairs, and loads and tests systems, circuits, equipment, and controls with little or no check during the progress or upon completion of work; and
Planning and laying out the needed routing, placement, pitch, incline, and elevation of systems and equipment, figuring pressures in the systems and seeing that the piping, valves, fittings, and equipment are proper for the work, completing installations, modifications, and repairs with little or no check during their progress or upon completion, and
Testing systems and equipment after completing work for proper circulation, flow, pressures, and leak-free joints.

WG-10: You must have experience or training in at least two of the following building maintenance trades: Electrical, Plumbing, Air Conditioning, Painting, Pipefitting, and Carpentry. You must have the ability and knowledge to complete a variety of tasks in these trades and be capable of reading and understanding blue prints, factory manuals, and operating manuals sufficient to accomplish the described tasks. You must be familiar with all tools, equipment, and materials used by maintenance mechanics.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Effort: ELECTRICAL - You will be required to make repairs from work stands and where parts worked on are in hard-to-reach places. You must be able to climb, stand, stoop, bend, stretch, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. You will frequently lift parts and equipment that weigh up to 60 pounds. You must also be able to distinguish colors and shades of colors. PIPEFITTING - You will be required to make repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms. You will frequently handle, lift, carry, and set up parts and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Occasionally, you may lift and carry items that weigh over 60 pounds. PAINTING - You will be required to prepare and coat surfaces from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms, and where the surfaces to be coated are in cramped and hard-to-reach places. You will frequently lift, carry, and set up material and equipment that weigh up to 10 pounds. Occasionally, you may handle materials and equipment that weigh 60 pounds and over. You must be able to distinguish colors. PLUMBING - You will be required to make repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms due to hard-to-reach parts and work places. You will frequently lift, carry, and set up parts and equipment that weigh up to 60 pounds.
Overtime and Shift Work: You will be subject to mandatory call to duty at any hour of the day or night to restore critical equipment to proper operating condition or perform work essential to maintain critical schedule requirements.
Work Conditions: Work is done inside and outside and is usually dirty, dusty, greasy and noisy. You will be subject to cuts from hand and powered tools and danger from flying splinters and chips. Subject to danger of falling when working from ladders and scaffolds. There is possibility of eye injury, electrical shock, burns, broken bones, and the chance of cuts when working with sharp objects. There is discomfort when wearing protective clothing, gloves, and flash shield or eye goggles.
