Speech Pathologist Jobs description

A speech pathologist diagnoses, treats, and provides management services to people of all ages with communication disorders, including speech, language, voice, fluency and literacy difficulties, or people who have physical problems with eating or swallowing. A speech pathologist uses written and oral tests as well as special instruments to diagnose the nature and extent of impairment, and to record and analyze speech, language and swallowing irregularities, determine the cause, and implement an individualized treatment plan. A speech pathologist often works on a team or with other health professionals such as physicians, audiologists, social workers, teachers, psychologists, nurses, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists, family doctors, infant development specialists, pre-school or schoolteachers, public health nurses and medical specialists refer people to speech pathologists. A speech pathologist’s work includes familiarity with the meanings, spelling, and use of words and phrases and ability to provide advice on social or personal problems, also research related to speech and language problems, anatomy, speech and language development, diagnostic and treatment methods, and record keeping.

A speech pathologist requires a master's degree in speech-language pathology or audio logy is the standard credential or relevant experience. A speech pathologist must be able to approach problems objectively and provide support to clients and their families. A speech pathologist must have good listening and interpersonal skills, enjoy language and communication, able to inspire confidence and cooperation.
