A technician uses the principles and theories of science, engineering, and mathematics to solve technical problems in research and development, manufacturing, sales, construction, inspection, and maintenance. A technician specializes in certain areas, learning skills and working in the same disciplines as engineers. A technician’s work is more limited in scope and more practically oriented than that of scientists and engineers. A technician has practical understanding of the general theoretical principles of the specific branch of engineering in which they work. A technician mainly works in research and development, builds or sets up equipment, prepares and conducts experiments, collects data, calculates or records the results, and helps engineers or scientists in other ways, such as making prototype versions of newly designed equipment. A technician assists in design work, often using computer-aided design equipment. A technician estimates labor costs, equipment life, and plant space. A technician tests and inspects machines and equipment in manufacturing departments or work with engineers to eliminate production problems.
A technician requires a bachelor’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering, and 1+ years of industry experience. A technician should have high level of electrical/ mechanical aptitude. A technician requires strong skills in change management and problem solving. Good communication skills, written and verbal are required.
